Raipur, March 10 (NationPress) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) executed raids at 14 sites connected to the son of ex-CM Bhupesh Baghel and affiliates in Durg district, Chhattisgarh, under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA). This operation is part of the ongoing probe into the alleged ₹2,161 crore liquor scam within the state.

ED teams searched the home of Chaitanya Baghel, the son of former Chief Minister Bhupesh Baghel, along with properties associated with his close aides and businessman Laxmi Narayan Bansal, also referred to as Pappu Bansal.

Reports indicate that investigators have uncovered evidence implying that Chaitanya Baghel benefited from the funds generated illegally.

In January, the ED detained former Excise Minister Kawasi Lakhma, alleging his significant involvement in the scam and his failure to combat the illicit liquor trade. Lakhma is accused of receiving ₹2 crore monthly in illegal payments. The agency also alleges that proceeds from the scam were invested in real estate, resulting in substantial losses for the state treasury.

The recent actions by the ED have sparked a political uproar in Chhattisgarh, leading opposition parties to revive corruption claims against the government. Congress supporters staged a protest outside Bhupesh Baghel's residence in response to the ED's raids.

The office of former CM Bhupesh Baghel dismissed the raids as politically charged, asserting: "When the baseless case that has lingered for seven years was thrown out of court, the ED arrived at the Bhilai house of former Chief Minister and Congress General Secretary Bhupesh Baghel this morning. If there’s an attempt to hinder Congress in Punjab through this conspiracy, they are mistaken."

The liquor scam, according to the ED, reportedly occurred between 2019 and 2022, during which the Congress administration led by Baghel was in power. To date, the agency has attached assets valued at ₹205 crore from various accused parties.

The investigation remains active, with further disclosures anticipated in the near future.
