Kolkata, Sep 10 (NationPress) The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has once again approached the Calcutta High Court to annul the bail granted to former state minister Jyoti Priya Mallick and his close associate Anisur Rahman, who are embroiled in the ration distribution irregularities case. The ED submitted its application to the High Court on Wednesday.
It is pertinent to mention that on October 27, 2023, the ED apprehended the senior Trinamool Congress leader and then state Forest Minister Jyoti Priya Mallick linked to the ration scam.
The ED has indicated that the former minister, affectionately dubbed “Balu” within and outside the party, was deeply involved in extensive corruption regarding the ration distribution during the Covid-19 lockdown. His arrest followed an extensive interrogation and the gathering of evidence.
Approximately 14 months post-arrest, the court granted him bail in January this year. Shortly after his release, his close aide Anisur, who also faced similar charges, was granted bail as well.
However, the ED has raised alarm that the accused might interfere with the ongoing investigation following their release. The agency contends that their freedom could lead to witness tampering and the potential destruction or concealment of crucial evidence.
Consequently, the ED is seeking the cancellation of their bail. Reports suggest that ED officials informed the court that the investigation remains in its preliminary stages, with financial irregularities potentially exceeding thousands of crores of rupees.
Thus, allowing the accused to remain free could severely compromise the integrity of the investigation.
On the other hand, the legal representatives of Jyoti Priya Mallick have asserted that they have yet to receive any pertinent documents related to this case. It’s noteworthy that Mallick had been recuperating post his jail release due to health issues.
Currently, he has resumed political activities, overseeing party operations in the North 24 Parganas district in preparation for the 2026 state Assembly polls. He has been active in his Assembly constituency Habra and recently attended a pivotal meeting at the party’s Camac Street office with All India General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
