Speaking at the inter-state socio-cultural event 'Kartik Jatra' in the Raidih block of Gumla district, the President stressed that it is vital to protect tribal identity and traditions as society evolves.
"Education serves as the most valuable asset for development. The overall advancement of both society and the state can only be achieved through its growth and distribution," she stated.
President Murmu paid homage to prominent tribal figure Pankhraj Saheb Kartik Oraon, a local of Gumla, calling him a beacon of inspiration.
"Even after receiving education abroad, he dedicated his life and intellect to his homeland and its people, recognizing education as the most potent tool for social transformation," she remarked, adding that the spirit of Kartik Jatra embodies this ethos even today.
She highlighted that Kartik Oraon’s aspiration to establish a university in Gumla is on the verge of realization.
Addressing the region's significance, the President noted that the area connecting Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, and Odisha is abundant in rivers, forests, plateaus, and mountains, preserving some of the nation’s oldest traditions.
Describing her visit to Jharkhand as a pilgrimage, she acknowledged it as the birthplace and workplace of Lord Birsa Munda, who is celebrated across the nation as a symbol of social justice and tribal pride.
She also mentioned the renowned social reformer and freedom fighter Jatra Tana Bhagat, who was born in Gumla and led a non-violent movement against British rule inspired by Mahatma Gandhi's principles.
In remembrance of Param Vir Chakra awardee Shaheed Albert Ekka, she stated that his unmatched courage during the 1971 India-Pakistan war is a source of national pride.
President Murmu commended the rich cultural heritage of the tribal community, noting that its music, dance, drama, and art traditions are exceptionally vibrant.
"This wealth is evident in the fact that over 100 tribal artists from across the nation have been recognized with the Padma Shri," she noted.
The event showcased lively performances by tribal dance troupes from various states, contributing to a festive atmosphere.
A substantial audience attended the event held at Pankhraj Saheb Kartik Oraon Chowk Barrier Bagicha, Manjhatoli in Gumla.
Among the attendees were Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren, Chhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai, Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi, Union Tribal Affairs Minister Jual Oram, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on SC/ST Affairs Faggan Singh Kulaste, and Jharkhand Governor Santosh Gangwar, among others.
