Adelaide, Dec 19 (NationPress) Former England captain Nasser Hussain asserts that Australia is decisively dominating the third Test and the Ashes series. He cautions that England faces “slim odds” of achieving a miraculous turnaround as the hosts establish a significant 356-run lead at Stumps on Day 3 of the Test at the Adelaide Oval on Friday.

With a 2-0 lead entering the third Test, a draw suffices for Australia to clinch the series, thereby retaining the Ashes Urn.

“Australia has plenty of batting still to come, and they will not rush. They are 2-0 up, and even a draw here means the Ashes are theirs,” Hussain stated during a segment on Sky Sports.

England had a strong start on Friday, with captain Ben Stokes scoring 83. He formed a vital partnership of 106 runs for the ninth wicket with Jofra Archer, who contributed 51, as they briefly raised hopes for a comeback by adding 73 runs to their overnight score of 213/8, reducing the deficit to 85 runs before being all out for 286.

However, Travis Head's unbeaten 142 bolstered Australia’s position for retaining the Ashes, currently enjoying a 356-run lead with six wickets left in their second innings.

“They want their bowlers, including Cummins, who is returning from injury, to have a substantial lead. They would prefer Nathan Lyon to bowl on a spin-friendly pitch, so they are in no rush. They’ll aim to extend the lead beyond 450,” Hussain explained.

“Under this regime, one thing England has performed well is chasing in the fourth innings, but this scenario is different. This is the Ashes at stake, and it seems like they will be chasing over 450 runs.”

“The odds are slim. England requires a miracle, yet I believe in the unpredictability of cricket – just recall Headingley in 2019 – it’s not over until it’s over. Especially in an Ashes series, you fight until the last ball, though England is certainly in a tough spot,” he concluded.
