Government Extends Export Obligation Deadline to August 31, 2026
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 7 (NationPress) On Saturday, the government announced an extension for the deadline to meet export obligations under certain export promotion schemes until August 31, 2026. This decision aims to support exporters who are currently dealing with challenges in global trade and shipping routes.
The announcement was made by the Directorate General of Foreign Trade (DGFT), a part of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, through a public notice.
This decision comes in light of the ongoing geopolitical events that are impacting global shipping routes, logistics corridors, and international supply chains.
The notification states that exporters who possess specified Advance Authorisations and Export Promotion Capital Goods authorisations, with export obligation periods ending between March 1, 2026, and May 31, 2026, will receive an automatic extension.
The new deadline for these exporters to fulfill their obligations is now August 31, 2026.
Officials have clarified that the extension will be granted automatically, and exporters will not need to file additional applications or pay any composition fees to benefit from this measure.
This initiative is designed to provide exporters with greater operational flexibility during a time when international trade and logistics are experiencing disruptions.
The relaxation applies to various types of Advance Authorisations, including those for annual requirements and special cases, as well as authorisations issued under the Export Promotion Capital Goods Scheme.
The government noted that this extension, as outlined in the public notice, is supplementary to existing provisions in the Foreign Trade Policy and the Handbook of Procedures, which already allow exporters to request extensions in their export obligation periods after paying the required composition fee.
The DGFT’s regional authorities will verify if exporters have fulfilled their obligations when they apply for the Export Obligation Discharge Certificate or at the time of authorisation closure or regularisation.
Customs authorities have also been notified regarding the updated timelines to ensure that exports can proceed smoothly under the revised obligation period.
Officials emphasized that this measure demonstrates the government’s ongoing commitment to support exporters and safeguard India’s export performance amid temporary global disruptions.
