In Panaji on November 23, 2023 (NationPress), Uzbekistan's GM Javokhir Sindarov and GM Wei Yi from China are set to clash in the final of the FIDE World Cup 2025. Both players secured their spots by triumphing in their semifinals through tiebreaks, which also guarantees their participation in the upcoming Candidates Tournament this Sunday.
The classical matches in both semifinals ended in draws, leading to a test of rapid skills during the tiebreak.
Sindarov, who previously eliminated GM Jose Eduardo Martinez Alcantara in the quarterfinals, asserted his dominance by besting Nodirbek Yakubboev in the initial rapid game while playing black pieces.
The 19-year-old prompted Yakubboev to resign after 47 moves when he was on the verge of promoting his c-file pawn to a queen in a rook-pawn endgame. He subsequently drew the second match effortlessly with white pieces, even as his opponent attempted to secure a win for 54 moves.
In the second semifinal, Wei exhibited his rapid chess prowess by drawing the first game with black and then overcoming GM Andrey Esipenko in 57 moves with white.
Wei, the highest-ranked player left in the tournament, faced a challenging position after move 55, as Esipenko had an extra two pawns in a rook-knight endgame. Nevertheless, the Russian Grandmaster overlooked a defensive move that could have shifted the material balance.
On reflecting about his victory, Wei Yi stated, “This is the biggest achievement of my chess career. I am very pleased with this outcome. I wasn't sure what the result would be today, but I aimed to perform my best. In the final position of the second game, my opponent made a rook blunder. Otherwise, black could have pursued a win, and I would have needed to play for a draw. It’s a lengthy tournament, and he may have been fatigued.”
Sindarov and Wei are now set to compete for the coveted Viswanathan Anand Cup, while Yakubboev and Esipenko will engage in a match for the remaining Candidates spots.
