Union Home Minister Amit Shah on 27 August used his Raksha Bandhan message to call for a sharper national focus on women's safety, education, economic independence, and leadership in nation-building, ahead of the festival observed on 28 August. Shah, who also serves as Union Cooperation Minister and represents Gandhinagar in the Lok Sabha, issued the statement from Ahmedabad.

Shah described Raksha Bandhan as a symbol of the bond of love, trust, and affection between brothers and sisters, as well as a reminder of the collective responsibility to protect the safety, dignity, and self-respect of women. He framed the festival not merely as a cultural occasion but as a prompt for policy commitment.

'The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government at the Centre, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, was working with the resolve to make Nari Shakti a force for national strength by placing women's empowerment at the centre of development,' Shah said.

Key Government Schemes Cited

Shah pointed to a range of Central government initiatives as evidence of this commitment, including Beti Bachao, Beti Padhao, Sukanya Samriddhi Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, Pradhan Mantri Matru Vandana Yojana, Lakhpati Didi, and Namo Drone Didi. He said these programmes were designed to connect girls and women with education, healthcare, security, economic self-reliance, and employment opportunities.

He highlighted the Lakhpati Didi scheme in particular, saying it was helping crores of women move toward self-employment and financial independence.

Women's Reservation Act Referenced

Shah also invoked the Women's Reservation Act, calling the move to increase women's representation in the Lok Sabha and state legislative assemblies a historic decision. He framed it as part of a broader shift from empowering women as beneficiaries to positioning them as drivers of national development.

'The decisions of the PM Modi-led government are advancing India's journey beyond women's empowerment towards women-led development,' Shah said.

Call to Citizens

Beyond government policy, Shah called on citizens to actively contribute — urging people to ensure that every girl in the country is safe, educated, and self-reliant. He asked that the dignity and capabilities of women be linked to national progress, and that efforts to expand women's participation in building a developed India be strengthened at every level.

This comes amid a sustained political focus by the BJP on women voters and welfare schemes ahead of several state assembly elections, making Shah's Raksha Bandhan statement as much a policy signal as a seasonal greeting.
