Why Was Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed Confined by Employees?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhaka, Dec 10 (NationPress) A group of officials and employees from multiple ministries and divisions at the Bangladesh Secretariat have confined Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed within his office on Wednesday due to ongoing demands for various allowances, according to reports from local media.
Witnesses indicated that numerous employees assembled outside the adviser’s office on the fourth floor of the Secretariat, as reported by the Dhaka Tribune.
Leading the assembly was Badiul Kabir, a factional president of the Bangladesh Secretariat Officers and Employees Combined Council, which resulted in the confinement of Salehuddin Ahmed at the Ministry of Finance.
Kabir remarked to the Dhaka Tribune that the Secretariat employees have been advocating for multiple allowances for an extended period, insisting they will not disperse until the government issues an official gazette regarding the benefits.
On December 3, employees from the Bangladesh Secretariat declared that they would escalate their movements starting January 10 if the government fails to release a gazette notification concerning the pay commission by the end of this month. This ultimatum was conveyed in a memorandum directed to the financial adviser by the organization’s secretary general, Nizam Uddin Ahmed, as reported by bdNews24.
The memorandum indicated that government employees held high hopes for the National Pay Commission-2025, established by the current interim government. However, the organization expressed concerns over the uncertainty surrounding the final stages, deeming it unfavorable for meeting their legitimate demands.
The council has advocated for a restructuring of the existing 20-grade pay scale to be reorganized into 10 phases with a 1:4 ratio. It noted that lower-grade employees are struggling due to rising commodity prices and the escalating cost of living. The delays in implementing the pay commission report have further heightened frustration among government officials.
The three primary demands highlighted by the organizations include the implementation of the 9th pay scale, the introduction of a secretariat allowance, and the establishment of a secretariat ration allowance.
