What Happened in Manipur’s Ukhrul District with Recent Firing?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Imphal, Feb 14 (NationPress) New reports of gunfire emerged on Saturday in the Litan Sareikhong area of Ukhrul district, Manipur, allegedly involving volunteers from the Tangkhul Naga villages, sparking fear and unrest among local inhabitants, according to local authorities.
The Manipur Police urged both the Kuki and Naga tribal groups around Litan village to maintain peace and avoid spreading false information to prevent further deterioration of the situation.
A police statement indicated that around 12 shots were fired from a 12-bore shotgun by Tangkhul volunteers near the foothills separating Sikibung and Litan Sareikhong.
“This incident has led to considerable anxiety among residents in the Litan area, especially considering the current circumstances. The site from which the shots were allegedly fired has been confirmed by a cooperative team of District Police, Central Armed Police Force (CAPF) members, and Tangkhul locals,” the statement elaborated.
In response to the escalating tensions, the police deployed a Border Security Force (BSF) team on the Mongkot Chepu side along the Thoubal River bank, while a Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) unit was stationed on the Litan Sareikhong side, also securing the river bank as part of efforts to bolster confidence among the communities. This has resulted in security forces overseeing both riverbanks to uphold law and order in the vicinity.
The Manipur Police reiterated their call for both communities around Litan to refrain from disseminating unverified or misleading information, cautioning that such actions could heighten tensions.
“For any inquiries or confirmations, the public is recommended to reach out to the District Magistrate or the Police. Legal measures will be taken against individuals found spreading false or misleading information that could incite discord,” the statement warned.
Meanwhile, the ongoing conflicts in Litan Sareikhong have significantly disrupted transportation, including public transit, along the Imphal–Ukhrul route since last week.
With signs of improvement in the situation, the state government lifted a five-day internet suspension imposed in Ukhrul district as well as parts of Kamjong and Kangpokpi districts.
The violence initially flared on February 7 in the tribal region after an alleged assault on a member of the Tangkhul Naga community at Litan village.
The situation was later resolved between the victim’s relatives and the chief of Litan Sareikhong, with both parties choosing to settle through traditional means.
Manipur's Deputy Chief Minister Losii Dikho, also a Naga leader, affirmed that the state government is dedicated to restoring peace while promoting sports among the youth.
During the closing event of the 78th Zomi Namni Football Tournament at Lamka Public Ground, Dikho expressed, “The state government is eager to foster peace and development, aligned with our Christian values.”
