Manipur's Ukhrul District Sees Dismantling of Illegal Bunkers Amid Kuki-Naga Clashes; Arms Recovered
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Manipur, March 25 (NationPress) - Security forces have successfully dismantled several illegal bunkers in the Ukhrul district of Manipur in response to renewed clashes between armed factions from two communities, resulting in injuries to at least three individuals, including one woman, as reported by officials on Wednesday.
A police representative in Imphal mentioned that synchronized operations were executed at various sites under the authority of the Litan police station.
During the crackdown, two unauthorized bunkers were demolished in the villages of Lengiangching and Mongkat Chepu, which are predominantly occupied by members of the Kuki and Naga communities.
“Numerous spent cartridges were also confiscated from the area. Following the operation, which neutralized many bunkers on both sides, gunfire has significantly decreased. Regular patrolling and strategic troop deployment have established area dominance,” the official explained.
The coordinated efforts were initiated in light of escalating tensions between Kuki and Tangkhul Naga villagers in the vicinity of Litan Sareikhong.
Earlier confrontations in February had led to the destruction of over 30 homes. In the past two months, sporadic gunfire incidents have been noted in various villages, including Mongkot Chepu and Sharkaphung.
On Tuesday, two Tangkhul Naga villagers were hurt by gunfire in Sharkaphung within the neighboring Kamjong district, while a Kuki woman was injured at Mongkot Chepu on Monday.
In a separate case, authorities arrested one Md Shanjit Khan (38) from Moreh, linked to an FIR filed in December 2025 in Senapati district.
Moreover, security forces seized a stockpile of weapons and ammunition in the Tingkhai Khullen and Nepali Khutti regions of Kangpokpi district.
The seized items included a 9 mm carbine with a magazine, six homemade 9 mm pistols with magazines, three single-barrel bolt-action rifles, two single-barrel pull-mechanism rifles, two improvised mortars, seven bore cartridges, 55 rounds of ammunition of varying calibers, and two kilograms of pellets.
Central and state security forces are actively conducting extensive operations against militant activities.
Search efforts and area control initiatives are ongoing in mixed-population and vulnerable regions across several districts.
A total of 113 checkpoints have been established throughout Manipur, covering both valley and hill districts to monitor the movement of suspicious persons and vehicles.
Additionally, security forces are providing escorts for vehicles, including trucks carrying essential goods, on the Imphal-Jiribam National Highway (NH-37).
Strict security measures and convoy protection protocols remain operational in sensitive areas to ensure safe transportation.
Manipur Police have urged citizens not to fall for rumors or be deceived by misleading videos circulating on social media.
“The authenticity of any such videos or audio clips should be confirmed with the Central Control Room. Sharing or disseminating false content will lead to legal consequences,” the police stated.
The police have also called on the public to return any looted firearms, ammunition, or explosives to the nearest police station or security personnel promptly.
