New Delhi, July 13 (NationPress) The Leader of Opposition (LoP) in the Odisha Assembly, Naveen Patnaik, has called upon Governor Hari Babu Kambhamapati to ensure that justice is served for the student who tragically set herself ablaze due to alleged sexual harassment by her instructor.
On Saturday, a young student from Fakir Mohan University (FMU) in Balasore ignited herself outside the principal's office after enduring months of persistent sexual harassment from her Head of Department.
The student suffered severe burn injuries and is currently fighting for her life in the hospital.
Patnaik, the former Chief Minister and leader of the Biju Janata Dal (BJD), expressed profound sorrow over the incident on social media, deeming it “shocking and deeply distressing”.
In a poignant post on X, he extended prayers for the student's swift recovery and urged the Odisha Governor, who also holds the position of Chancellor of state universities, to take action and ensure justice.
Reports indicate that the student had previously attempted suicide and had written a detailed letter to the college principal, documenting repeated incidents of sexual harassment and coercion by a faculty member.
“For months, she lived in fear and distress. On July 1, in a desperate attempt for help, she shared her grievances on social media, tagging several high-ranking officials. Yet, faced with inaction, she tragically resorted to self-immolation outside the principal's office as a final plea to end her suffering,” stated the former Chief Minister.
The incident has sparked widespread outrage and raised significant concerns regarding the failure of institutional mechanisms meant to protect vulnerable students.
“This harrowing incident highlights the stark reality of her denied justice, despite her repeated appeals to the College Principal, the Higher Education Minister, the Union Minister, and even the Chief Minister,” Patnaik noted, demanding immediate action.
Meanwhile, a BJD delegation led by senior party leader and former Minister Snehangini Chhuria visited the Burn Centre at AIIMS Bhubaneswar to assess the victim's condition.
Chhuria later remarked that the student's condition is extremely critical and her family is devastated, adding that the entire state is praying for her recovery.
“She faced not just harassment but negligence at every level despite reaching out to senior authorities. Fifteen days ago, she even tagged Union Minister Dharmendra Pradhan, the State Education Minister, and the Chief Minister in her social media post. Still, no action was taken. This silence speaks volumes,” Chhuria alleged.
Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi is scheduled to visit AIIMS Bhubaneswar to evaluate the condition of the girl and will interact with the doctors treating the critically injured student.
The incident has reignited the discourse on safeguarding women at universities and educational institutions from sexual harassment, as the nation witnesses a series of such cases, with students and advocacy groups demanding accountability and systemic reforms in addressing complaints within higher education.
