New Delhi, Aug 2 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has responded to Rahul Gandhi's persistent claims regarding irregularities in the Maharashtra Assembly elections of 2024, emphasizing that the Congress leader has yet to reply to an official invitation sent to him almost two months ago.
In a letter dated June 12, 2025, the Commission urged the Leader of the Opposition to engage in a discussion concerning the issues he highlighted in a newspaper article.
The ECI further noted that similar concerns had been raised by the Indian National Congress after the elections and were thoroughly addressed in an official statement issued on December 24, 2024 – accessible on the Commission's website.
On Saturday, Rahul Gandhi again criticized the election body, asserting that it is no longer functioning independently and labeling the ECI as “dead.”
EC insiders stated that the allegations made by Rahul Gandhi are entirely unfounded and that there were no discrepancies in any elections.
Sources within the Commission mentioned that Rahul Gandhi has not yet replied to the June 12 invitation. They rejected his assertions as “unfounded” and cautioned that such remarks could erode public confidence in a constitutionally independent institution.
“The Commission operates with complete transparency. All its activities are subject to scrutiny and governed strictly by the law,” stated a senior ECI official.
Significantly, the poll panel also reaffirmed the integrity of Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) on Thursday, declaring them tamper-proof following a comprehensive checking and verification (C&V) process carried out in Maharashtra.
This process was initiated in response to applications from 10 candidates who participated in the 2024 Maharashtra Legislative Assembly elections.
The verification involved 48 Ballot Units (BUs), 31 Control Units (CUs), and 31 Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trails (VVPATs).
The verification confirmed that all machines were functioning correctly and no discrepancies were found between the EVM results and VVPAT slips.
This development arises amidst escalating political tension between the Congress party and the Election Commission, with Gandhi persistently accusing the latter of operating under pressure.
The ECI's response is viewed as a strong rebuttal to such allegations.
