Rahul Gandhi Criticizes Kerala's Left for Alliance with BJP
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kannur, March 31 (NationPress) - Congress leader Rahul Gandhi launched a vehement critique of the ruling Left Democratic Front in Kerala on Tuesday, accusing them of forming an "unprecedented alliance" with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He framed the upcoming Assembly election as a significant ideological conflict.
As the prominent campaign figure for the United Democratic Front (UDF), Gandhi met with local leaders over breakfast before addressing a large rally that featured candidates from across the district.
A noteworthy aspect of the event was the participation of veteran former CPI(M) leaders T.K. Govindan and V. Kunjikrishnan, who are now UDF candidates. Gandhi highlighted their presence on stage as evidence of a transformation within the Left.
“This election represents a struggle between two ideologies: the Left and the UDF. For the first time, we witness a collaboration between the Left and the BJP,” Gandhi remarked, labeling it a "puzzle" given their historically conflicting stances.
He contended that the contemporary Left has strayed from its foundational beliefs, now exhibiting a "soft corner for corporates" and failing to advocate for the people's interests.
To bolster his claims, Gandhi presented what he termed "two clues." He observed that while Prime Minister Narendra Modi often raises religious topics nationwide, he notably avoids doing so in Kerala, especially concerning Sabarimala.
He also questioned why, despite facing numerous legal issues, including the loss of his Lok Sabha seat and extensive questioning, no equivalent actions have been taken against Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan or his relatives.
“The BJP desires the CPI(M) to remain in power because they can exert control over them. A Congress-led UDF government is beyond their influence,” Gandhi asserted, emphasizing that only the Congress party possesses the capability to effectively challenge PM Modi on a national scale.
Addressing broader national concerns, Gandhi criticized the central government's economic and foreign policies, claiming that recent trade agreements favoring the United States would detrimentally impact Indian farmers, particularly those growing rubber, corn, soy, and fruits.
He also cautioned against potential threats to India’s energy security and small enterprises.
Positioning the election as a choice of values, Gandhi noted that Kerala has traditionally embodied principles of unity, non-violence, and inclusiveness.
“The UDF fosters unity through love and brotherhood, while this Left-BJP partnership encourages division,” he stated.
Following his time in Kannur, Gandhi is set to travel to Nadapuram in Kozhikode district to participate in two additional campaign events.
