Gehlot Condemns Cost Surge and Delays in Pachpadra Refinery Project
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Jaipur, April 10 (NationPress) Former Chief Minister of Rajasthan, Ashok Gehlot, expressed significant disappointment on Wednesday regarding the BJP administration's management of the Pachpadra Refinery project. He labeled the situation as a “mega chapter” of what he referred to as 'Intezaar Shastra', symbolizing the extensive delays in progress. “The financial outlay has surged from Rs 37,229 crore to almost Rs 80,000 crore, indicative of inadequate planning and politically-driven postponements,” he remarked.
In his remarks, Gehlot accused the BJP-led governments of inflicting “serious injustice” to the citizens of Rajasthan by prolonging the project and amplifying its cost.
Gehlot articulated on X, "The BJP’s governance has perpetrated a serious injustice against the people of Rajasthan concerning this refinery. An unwarranted financial burden has been thrust upon the public. The project expenses soared from Rs 37,229 crore to around Rs 80,000 crore. Motivated by the politics of credit-seeking, the BJP intentionally delayed the initiative for over seven and a quarter years. Even with the hurdles posed by COVID-19, the Congress administration had successfully completed 80 percent of the work," he stated.
“The BJP’s narrow-minded politics have severely impacted the state’s economy and the job prospects for its youth. Why does the BJP exhibit such hostility towards the advancement of Rajasthan?” Gehlot questioned.
In tracing the project's origins, Gehlot noted that the idea for the refinery emerged after the Congress assumed power in 2008. He mentioned that discussions were initiated with Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL), who were initially reluctant to commence the venture. “It was only through the intervention of then Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA Chairperson Sonia Gandhi that the project gained approval,” he explained.
He added that the foundation stone was laid by Sonia Gandhi with the intention of enhancing India’s energy security and transforming Barmer into a significant energy hub.
“The refinery was designed to position Rajasthan at the forefront of the nation’s oil and energy landscape,” he pointed out. However, Gehlot claimed that the change in government led to the project being “politically manipulated” and subsequently halted by the BJP.
“For years, the project lingered in limbo. The Congress had to resort to protests, and only under pressure did the BJP resume work in 2018,” he asserted.
Reflecting on his tenure, Gehlot mentioned that the project was prioritized when Congress regained power. “Despite interruptions due to COVID-19, ongoing oversight ensured consistent progress, with nearly 80 percent of the work completed during our administration,” he noted.
He further contended that the delays had negative repercussions on employment and economic development. “The youth of Rajasthan missed out on crucial opportunities due to these unwarranted delays,” he remarked.
Referring to the refinery as a testament to the Congress’ commitment, Gehlot stated, “As the refinery approaches completion, its scale symbolizes our dedication to public welfare. This represents the genuine model of development where public interest supersedes political motives.”
The Pachpadra Refinery is anticipated to greatly enhance energy security and economic activity in the region, even as political discussions surrounding its execution persist.
