Jaipur, May 1 (NationPress) Former Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot has urged the Central government to establish a definitive timeline for the caste census, while demanding transparency and decisive measures in response to the Pahalgam terror attack. He emphasized that the opposition has consistently supported the Union government in both circumstances.
"The government must immediately allocate sufficient resources and clarify when it will commence, the duration of the process, and the subsequent steps," Gehlot insisted during a media briefing.
Backing both the caste census initiative and the government's approach to the recent Pahalgam terror attack, Gehlot stated that the time for mere statements and discussions has passed, especially since the opposition has shown full solidarity with Prime Minister Narendra Modi regarding national security.
Gehlot challenged the government's procrastination in executing the long-overdue national caste census, which was initially slated for 2021.
"The government must now take action. The public deserves clarity on its intentions. What is causing the repeated delays in the census?" he questioned.
He referred to the Union Budget, which allocated Rs 600 crore for the census, deeming it inadequate.
The former Chief Minister credited the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for his persistent advocacy for the caste census as a significant reason behind the government’s recent decision.
"His determination on this matter has created immense pressure. It’s better late than never. Rahul is also advocating for the removal of the 50 percent cap on reservations, which should now be addressed," he remarked.
In questioning the BJP's shift in position, Gehlot stated, "When Congress raised the issue of the caste census, the RSS and BJP accused us of fracturing society. Now, those same parties are taking steps in that direction. Whether this is voluntary or under duress, the action is noteworthy."
Gehlot commended the Telangana government for its scientific methodology in caste enumeration, urging the Centre to examine and adopt the Telangana model.
"Justice should be informed by data. Telangana has implemented a systematic approach that has become a model for others to follow," he emphasized.
Stressing the significance of social justice and national unity, Gehlot stated: "Even after 75 years, if SCs, STs, and OBCs have not received their rightful due, we must take action. A unified society—transcending caste and religion—is our true strength, especially in the face of hostile neighbors."
Regarding the Pahalgam terrorist attack, Gehlot underlined that the opposition has granted PM Modi and the NDA government a free hand.
"Rahul Gandhi has made it clear that the opposition stands united with the government on issues of national security. This is not a subject for public debate. Such decisions must be approached with prudence and agreement," Gehlot concluded.
He pointed out that in both the Pahalgam terror response and the caste census issue, the opposition has provided constructive support to the government rather than political criticism.
