New Delhi, Aug 7 (NationPress) Shubman Gill has been officially appointed as the captain of the North Zone team for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, which is set to commence on August 28 in Bengaluru. This announcement follows his successful leadership in guiding India to a 2-2 Test series draw in England.
In addition to Gill, who amassed 754 runs across five Tests in England, the squad includes notable players such as left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh, seamer Anshul Kamboj, and fast-bowling all-rounder Harshit Rana.
Kamboj made his Test debut in the fourth match against England in Manchester, while Rana has had appearances in India ‘A’ games against the England Lions, and Arshdeep did not feature in the Test series.
The Zonal selection committee convened in New Delhi on Thursday to finalize the 15-member squad. They also indicated that Shubham Rohilla from Services, Gurnoor Brar from Punjab, and Anuj Thakral from Haryana will join the main squad if Gill, Arshdeep, or Rana are called up for India's upcoming matches that coincide with the Duleep Trophy.
India's next major event is the Men’s T20 Asia Cup, scheduled from September 9-28 in the UAE. Other key members of the North Zone squad include the Delhi duo of all-rounder Ayush Badoni and batter Yash Dhull, who led India to victory in the 2022 U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.
The North Zone squad also features four players from Jammu & Kashmir – Shubham Khajuria, Sahil Lotra, Yudhvir Singh Charak, and Auqib Nabi, with Abid Mushtaq on the standby list.
The Duleep Trophy will take place in the traditional zonal format of six teams, marking the start of the 2025/26 domestic cricket season. North Zone will kick off their campaign against the East Zone, led by Ishan Kishan, at the BCCI Centre of Excellence Ground, with the winner advancing to face South Zone in the semi-final.
