Gandhinagar, Jan 23 (NationPress) Gujarat Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel made a pivotal announcement on Friday, introducing a one-time waiver of penal interest for beneficiaries of the rural housing initiatives led by the Gujarat Rural Housing Board. This measure is set to provide relief to thousands of families residing in the state's rural regions.

The newly introduced scheme aims to alleviate the financial strain on those willing to pay off their remaining housing loan principal but who have faced challenges in addressing the penal interest accrued from delayed payments.

Beneficiaries of various housing programs under the Gujarat Rural Housing Board will qualify for this one-time waiver if they settle their outstanding principal within a designated period of six months.

The penal interest, which amounts to two percent per month on overdue payments, will be entirely waived for those who meet the stipulated conditions within the set timeframe.

Officials revealed that this decision was prompted by numerous beneficiaries who approached the Chief Minister, expressing their readiness to repay the principal amount fully, yet finding the accrued penal interest overwhelmingly burdensome.

In light of these appeals, Chief Minister Patel instructed the implementation of the one-time relief scheme to benefit rural housing recipients significantly.

Approximately 9,029 rural families throughout Gujarat are anticipated to gain from this initiative.

The total financial relief through the waiver of penal interest is projected to reach nearly Rs 154 crore.

Officials characterized this move as a substantial financial uplift for low-income households engaged in the state's housing programs.

A key aspect of this decision is that beneficiaries who pay off their entire principal amount within the six-month period will also secure formal ownership rights to their dwellings.

This transfer of ownership will enable these families to officially become homeowners, thereby ensuring long-term housing security.

By allowing beneficiaries to regularize their housing accounts without the burden of penal interest, the state government intends to expedite the process of conferring legal ownership to eligible families.

Officials have emphasized that this relief initiative will be a one-time offer, urging beneficiaries to seize the opportunity within the designated period.

This initiative is expected to assist rural families in realizing their aspiration of owning a permanent residence, further supporting ongoing efforts to improve housing access in Gujarat's villages.
