IPL 2026: Mumbai Indians Introduce Debutants Krish and Danish as Gujarat Titans Choose to Bowl
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, April 20 (NationPress) In the 30th match of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026 at the Narendra Modi Stadium, the Gujarat Titans (GT) have won the toss and chosen to bowl first against the Mumbai Indians (MI). The five-time champions have introduced changes to their lineup, with Krish Bhagat and Danish Malewar making their debuts, while Ryan Rickleton and Deepak Chahar are out of action.
Following the toss, GT captain Shubman Gill commented, "Honestly, it seems like a decent wicket. There was a little dew in the previous match, so if that happens today, it might be advantageous to bowl first. It's always beneficial to have a target to chase. Our bowling has been strong from the outset, which has been a significant positive for us in recent games. We hope to keep that momentum going, and Rashid Khan has been exceptional in the middle overs for us."
"Having runs on the board is vital, especially in a lengthy tournament like the IPL. A solid start can set the tone for a great season. I'm looking forward to this match against a robust opponent," he added.
After losing the toss, MI skipper Hardik Pandya reflected on the team's modifications and overall performance this season.
"We would have preferred to bowl first as well. This is our last match as a group, and we needed to have discussions about what the Mumbai Indians represent and the style of cricket we aim to play. There have been numerous conversations, and the team is eager to take the field. (Can you bounce back?) Yes, we've done it before, and this time we aim to initiate our winning streak with a strong performance, ticking off all necessary boxes. We must support each other and play good cricket," he stated.
"There will be challenges, but we need to stick together and deliver our best. (Areas for improvement) We need to elevate our overall game. I can’t isolate one aspect. As I’ve mentioned, we either win as a team or lose as a team. It's a new day, and we have a couple of debuts today. Danish Malewar is making his debut for the Mumbai Indians, and Krish Bhagat, who impressed us just days ago, is stepping onto the field today," he further explained.
The GT team has rebounded strongly from their initial two defeats, achieving three back-to-back victories. Their bowling unit, a strength last season, is regaining its form and is now effective in every phase of the innings. Prasidh Krishna has once again emerged as one of the top wicket-takers, while Rashid Khan continues to excel in the middle overs. Both Siraj and Rabada are also demonstrating solid performances.
Conversely, the Mumbai Indians are grappling with a lack of momentum. After breaking their long-standing streak of losing opening matches, they have now faced four consecutive defeats, placing them in the lower half of the standings. While Jasprit Bumrah has been economical, he has yet to secure a wicket in five matches, and the entire bowling unit has struggled to take wickets consistently and control the flow of runs.
