IPL 2026: Shubman Gill Reflects on Gujarat Titans’ 99-Run Loss to Mumbai Indians
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ahmedabad, April 20 (NationPress) Captain Shubman Gill acknowledged that the Gujarat Titans (GT) allowed too many runs during the middle overs, resulting in a significant 99-run defeat to the Mumbai Indians (MI) in Match 30 of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2026, held at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Monday.
“To be honest, we conceded too many runs in the middle overs. On a pitch like that, I feel that 160-170 was a par score,” Gill remarked post-match.
The Mumbai Indians set a formidable target of 199/5, propelled by a remarkable unbeaten century of 101 runs from just 45 balls by Tilak Varma, who matched the franchise record for the fastest century. Naman Dhir contributed significantly with a solid 45 runs, while Kagiso Rabada was the standout bowler for GT, claiming three wickets.
In pursuit of a challenging target, the Gujarat Titans struggled to establish momentum. Jasprit Bumrah struck early on the very first ball, and Hardik Pandya dismissed Jos Buttler soon after, putting MI in a commanding position. Despite a brief resurgence, GT consistently lost wickets.
“There are numerous lessons for us to learn from this match. It's a minor setback, but we have a couple of games coming up, and we aim to bounce back with a win,” Gill stated.
The bowlers from Mumbai Indians excelled during the chase, with Ashwani Kumar shining with an impressive four-wicket haul, while Mitchell Santner and Allah Ghazanfar added two wickets each to restrict GT well below the target.
Reflecting on possible adjustments, Gill noted that his bowlers struggled to adapt to the conditions. “I thought the pitch was slightly slower. We weren't consistently hitting the right areas. The length balls varied, with some coming on well while others kept low,” he explained.
“We should have maintained that length during the middle overs more consistently, which we failed to do,” he added.
Gill felt the pitch conditions remained fairly consistent throughout both innings. “I believe it was quite similar. If anything, it might have improved slightly due to the additional dew during our batting phase,” he concluded.
Following this defeat, the Gujarat Titans have slipped to sixth place in the points table with three victories out of six matches. Their next challenge is against Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on April 24.
