Mumbai, May 7 (NationPress) Gujarat Titans' captain Shubman Gill expressed his satisfaction with the team's resilience in clinching a thrilling victory against the Mumbai Indians, yet he remained cautious about claiming a playoff spot following the tumultuous rain-affected match at the Wankhede Stadium.

After limiting the Mumbai Indians to a modest 155/8, the Gujarat Titans were in control with 107/2 in 14 overs when rain disrupted the game. Upon resumption, the five-time champions made a strong comeback with Jasprit Bumrah taking down Gill and securing the wicket of Shahrukh Khan. The Gujarat Titans experienced a collapse, losing four wickets for just 26 runs, leaving them at 132/6 when the rain intervened again.

The match resumed 30 minutes past the scheduled time with GT needing 15 runs in one over to meet a revised target. Rahul Tewatia hit a four and Gerald Coetzee smashed a six, while Deepak Chahar bowled a no-ball, dismissed Coetzee, and MI missed a crucial run-out. In a dramatic conclusion, GT triumphed by three wickets using the DLS method.

Emotionally exhausted post-match, Gill emphasized that he didn’t want to assume playoff qualification, urging his players to focus on giving their best in the upcoming matches.

“Thoughts like this can creep in, but we want to approach each game independently. We’re not playing for positions; we’re playing to excel in every match,” stated Gill after GT finished with 147/7 in 19 overs.

Named Player of the Match, Gill acknowledged the chaos during the rain interruption but celebrated another victory for his team.

“There was some chaos when we batted after the rain. But it’s always rewarding to secure a win post-match. Our game plans shifted significantly during the powerplay. The wind and rain made it feel like a Test match for the first few overs; we had to play conservatively. After the powerplay, we aimed to play our natural game,” he commented during the post-match presentation.

Gill recognized the challenge of tracking the DLS score amidst the rapidly changing conditions.

“On this pitch, it was pretty tough. The wicket was a bit slow, and with the rain, hitting through the line became difficult. We aimed to rotate the strike and capitalize when the balls were in our strike zones,” he noted.

He added that emotions ran high in the dugout during the second rain break, with players feeling frustrated.

“There was a lot of frustration because we were in a strong position at one point. But then, four overs of play resulted in 20 runs for four wickets, resembling a challenging Test session. The universe provided us another chance, and everything fell into place in the end,” Gill remarked.

He mentioned that victories like these can significantly boost the team's morale and propel them further in a tournament like the IPL.

“In a match that goes down to the wire, every contribution is vital. From Sherfane to all the bowlers, every small action on the field makes a considerable impact. Even after such a chaotic game, it’s wins like these that carry you through a tournament like the IPL,” said the Gujarat Titans' skipper.

Gill also expressed his pleasure at the return of ace spinner Rashid Khan. “Coming back from an injury is tough. However, the effort he’s been putting in during practice and his performance today is a promising sign for us.”
