Has Gujarat Achieved a Milestone in Cancer Screening?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Gandhinagar, Feb 3 (NationPress) Gujarat has marked a significant milestone in public health by executing extensive cancer screening initiatives across the state over the last four years. This effort has bolstered early detection and improved access to treatment just ahead of World Cancer Day. According to health department statistics, over three crore individuals aged 30 and above have been screened for oral cancer, while more than 1.6 crore women have participated in breast cancer screenings and over 82 lakh women have been checked for cervical cancer.
World Cancer Day is celebrated globally on February 4 annually to enhance awareness and motivate proactive measures against cancer.
This year's theme, 'United by Unique', emphasizes the necessity of patient-centered care and acknowledges that each person's journey with cancer is distinct. Cancer remains a leading cause of mortality worldwide.
According to estimates from the National Cancer Institute, there were more than 14 lakh cancer cases reported in India in 2025. Annually, nearly one crore individuals succumb to cancer globally, underscoring the critical nature of prevention, early diagnosis, and timely treatment.
In Gujarat, cancer poses a serious public health obstacle. Data from the ICMR–National Centre for Disease Informatics and Research reveals that one in nine men and one in twelve women in the state are at risk of developing cancer during their lifetime.
Men are more commonly diagnosed with tobacco-related cancers, while breast and cervical cancers are notably prevalent among women.
Health officials have pointed out that lifestyle, environmental, and genetic factors are contributing to the increasing rates of these cancers.
State health authorities have reported that the comprehensive screening drive has been instrumental in detecting suspected cases at an early stage, facilitating quicker referrals and treatment.
“Regular screenings and prompt diagnoses are essential for enhancing cancer outcomes and saving lives,” stated an official.
Under the leadership of Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel, the state government has rolled out various initiatives focused on cancer prevention and management.
These initiatives encompass tobacco cessation programs, promoting balanced diets and regular physical activity, vaccination efforts, and awareness campaigns within both urban and rural communities.
To bolster human resources in the healthcare system, the government has entered into a memorandum of understanding with the Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute to execute a 'Training of Trainers' program.
This initiative aims to train gynaecologists, surgeons, dentists, community medicine specialists, and medical officers as master trainers.
With their assistance, over 37,000 frontline health workers statewide are expected to be trained to improve cancer screening and referral services. Screening initiatives for oral, breast, and cervical cancers are being conducted from sub-health centers to medical colleges.
Additionally, day-care chemotherapy facilities at district hospitals are delivering treatment closer to patients’ residences.
The Gujarat Cancer and Research Institute, along with its satellite centers, continues to provide outpatient services, diagnostic capabilities, surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy, further enhancing cancer care throughout the state.
