Mumbai, March 31 (NationPress) India's current World Champion Gukesh Dommaraju has opted out of the remaining competitions in the ongoing 2026 Grand Chess Tour. However, he will be participating in the Rapid & Blitz tournaments in Warsaw and Zagreb as a wildcard entrant. Gukesh's decision comes as he seeks to recover from a series of disappointing performances.

The Grand Chess Tour (GCT) provided an update on Tuesday regarding the 2026 tour lineup set in Saint Louis, USA.

In his statement, Gukesh expressed: "My recent performances have not met my expectations, and I know they haven't met yours either. To regain my best form, my team and I have concluded that I should reduce my participation in events in the coming months. Therefore, it is crucial for me to forgo longer events away from home to focus on intensive training.

"With this perspective, I reached out to the Grand Chess Tour organizers to request participation in only two of the European Rapid & Blitz events. They were incredibly understanding and supportive, allowing me to compete in Warsaw and Zagreb this year. I’m very thankful for their support. As of now, I do not plan to engage in any other events during the Grand Chess Tour schedule, but I certainly aim to return for the full Grand Chess Tour in the future," he stated.

Javokhir Sindarov from Uzbekistan will step in as a full tour participant in the 2026 Grand Chess Tour, taking Gukesh's place in the lineup. The reigning FIDE World Cup champion has secured his position due to his exceptional recent performances on the international stage. As a full tour participant, Sindarov will compete in Warsaw, Bucharest, and both events in Saint Louis.

“We respect Gukesh’s decision and are pleased to welcome him to participate in the Rapid & Blitz events in Warsaw and Zagreb,” expressed Alex Onischuk, Deputy Executive Director of the GCT, in a statement on Tuesday. “Simultaneously, we are thrilled to have Javokhir Sindarov join the full Tour. His performance at the highest level has been remarkable, and we anticipate his contributions throughout the 2026 season.”

The 2026 GCT season will continue to unite the world’s top players across a series of prestigious international competitions. The schedule for the 2026 tour remains as follows:

Super Rapid & Blitz Poland: May 3-10, 2026, Warsaw, Poland
