Gurugram: MCG Imposes ₹36.70 Lakh Penalty on 879 Offenders for Breaching GRAP Regulations

Gurugram, Dec 4 (NationPress) The Municipal Corporation of Gurugram (MCG) has taken strict measures against 879 offenders, imposing a penalty of ₹36.70 lakhs as part of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP), which has been implemented in the district since October 15 to tackle air pollution.

The violations include 21 challans for burning garbage, 39 challans for burning coal or wood in tandoors, 202 challans related to construction and demolition activities, 27 challans for dumping construction and demolition (C&D) waste, 331 challans for improper garbage disposal, and 259 challans for the use of banned plastics.

MCG Commissioner Ashok Kumar Garg stated that all actions contributing to pollution are strictly prohibited under GRAP. This includes burning coal or wood in tandoors, construction and demolition activities, improper disposal of construction materials, littering in public spaces, and burning of waste, which are considered punishable offences.

"MCG teams are actively monitoring violators. Since the enforcement of GRAP on October 15, penalties totaling ₹36.70 lakhs have been imposed on 879 individuals," he mentioned.

It is important to highlight that the Central Air Quality Management Commission initiated the implementation of GRAP in the National Capital Region and its surroundings earlier in October.

Garg emphasized the need for the MCG to adhere strictly to GRAP regulations. This includes mechanizing street cleaning and spraying purified water on roads and trees.

"Departments responsible for managing pollution levels have been given specific instructions, and the Commission has imposed restrictions on many pollution-inducing activities. Non-compliance with GRAP rules will result in fines as stipulated," he added.

Officials from MCG reported that in accordance with GRAP, the civic body is utilizing 14 machines for mechanized road sweeping and is actively spraying water with tankers at construction sites to suppress dust.

Garg reiterated that under GRAP, activities like burning waste, littering, and transporting uncovered construction materials are strictly forbidden.

He also mentioned that the civic body is employing STP-treated water to spray on roads and trees to help mitigate pollution levels.

MCG has deployed 10 anti-smog guns and 18 water tankers. Additionally, various builders within the corporation's jurisdiction are also using anti-smog guns to combat pollution.

He added that 16 mechanized sweeping machines are currently operational on various routes for main road cleaning.

"Adherence to environmental regulations during construction and demolition is mandatory. We are continually taking action against those engaged in prohibited activities. Residents are encouraged to refrain from activities that contribute to pollution and to report any violations at the toll-free number 1800-180-1817," he stated.
