Bhopal, July 14 (NationPress) In Harda, Madhya Pradesh, the atmosphere seems to be calming following a weekend of turmoil ignited by a clash between Karni Sena activists and law enforcement. The town, which experienced extensive protests and a significant police presence, is steadily moving towards normalcy.
District Collector Aditya Singh has rescinded 163 prohibitory orders and sanctioned the release of individuals detained during the ‘chakka jam’ demonstration.
Although these measures have been implemented, local officials remain vigilant, recognizing that tensions could arise again as community leaders and supporters continue to voice their discontent. The situation, while more peaceful, is still being monitored closely.
The unrest was initiated when Ashish Rajput, a representative of the Karni Sena, lodged a complaint claiming a fraud of Rs 18 lakh linked to a diamond transaction involving three individuals. Police apprehended one suspect, Mohit Verma, and attempted to bring him before the court on Saturday. However, approximately 40 Karni Sena activists gathered outside the courthouse, demanding the suspect's custody and obstructing legal proceedings.
This provocation led to an escalation, with police resorting to lathi-charge and detaining four individuals, including district president Sunil Rajput and the complainant Ashish Rajput.
In a statement shared on his X account, Jeevan Singh Sherpur, the national president of Karni Sena, conveyed that the fight against injustice would persist, but without disrupting the lives of ordinary citizens.
Superintendent of Police Abhinav Chouksey defended the police action via a video message on X, asserting that the demand for the suspect’s handover was unconstitutional and that minimal force was utilized only after activists misbehaved with officers at the police station.
He highlighted that the incident originated from a personal dispute and should not have been associated with any organization.
The crackdown incited widespread protests throughout the district, leading the administration to impose Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (previously Section 144) and seal Harda’s borders. Over 50 arrests occurred, with additional police forces dispatched from neighboring districts, including Betul and Khandwa.
On Monday morning, four senior Karni Sena leaders, including national president Jivan Singh Sherpur, were conditionally released in the presence of SDM Kumar Shanu Devdiya.
Sherpur was released outside the district limits after providing a written commitment to refrain from participating in further protests.
District Collector Aditya Singh lifted 163 prohibitory orders late Sunday, signaling a cautious easing of restrictions.
Nonetheless, the atmosphere remains unstable, with reports of members from the Rajput community mobilizing statewide.
Congress leaders have denounced the police actions as a breach of democratic rights, demanding an impartial investigation.
As social media amplifies the unrest, authorities are urging for restraint and vigilance. The administration has submitted a detailed report to the Home Department in Bhopal, while the Karni Sena has declared plans to continue its agitation, with a new date yet to be determined.
