Mumbai, Feb 20 (NationPress) The renowned lyricist Iqbal Husain, famously known as Hasrat Jaipuri, once recounted the tale of his first love and how it shaped his lyrical journey.
An archived video of Hasrat Jaipuri emerged on social media, revealing his reflections on education and how his romantic experiences fueled his career as a lyricist.
In the video, he expressed in Hindi, “My name is Iqbal Hussain. I hail from Jaipur. There lived a stunning girl named Radha just across from my home. Love transcends religion and caste; it can blossom with anyone. I fell for her. I delved into poetry, receiving my education from my late grandfather. Wahan se mujhe Ishq ka sabak mila (Radha imparted the lesson of love to me). That’s how I became a poet. I penned my first poem for her. She often graced the jharokha. When you glance at the jharokha, I ponder deeply. When you gaze at the jharokha, I wonder, should I love you or not?”
Iqbal pursued English studies up to a medium level in Jaipur and later acquired his taalim (education) in Urdu and Persian from his maternal grandfather, the poet Fida Husain 'Fida'. He commenced writing poetry around the age of twenty, coinciding with his affection for Radha. Hasrat shared the story of a love letter he composed for her in an interview.
He remarked, “It is not a prerequisite for a Muslim boy to love only a Muslim girl. My love was unvoiced, yet I crafted a poem for her, 'Yeh mera prem patra padh kar, ke tum naaraaz na hona’. The fate of the love letter remains unknown, but it caught the attention of renowned film producer Raj Kapoor, who incorporated it into his film ‘Sangam’. The revered singer Mohammed Rafi lent his voice to the song.
