Mumbai, May 26 (NationPress): Intense rainfall has persistently affected Mumbai and several regions in Maharashtra since Sunday. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has released weather alerts, urging residents to remain vigilant.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Mumbai predicts heavy showers for Mumbai, Konkan, and western Maharashtra on Monday. A red alert has been declared for Mumbai, Navi Mumbai, and Raigad, while Thane and Palghar are under an orange alert. A yellow alert has been issued for Ratnagiri, Sindhudurg, Kolhapur, Satara, Pune, and Nashik.
The IMD advisory states, "A generally cloudy sky with potential thunderstorms, lightning, gusty winds (40-50 kmph), and heavy rainfall in isolated areas of the city and its suburbs. Thunderstorms along with lightning and intense rainfall with gusty winds of up to 50-60 kmph are highly likely in isolated spots across Mumbai districts over the next 3-4 hours. Please take precautions if you need to go outside."
While the monsoon has already arrived in various parts of Maharashtra, the IMD anticipates its arrival in Mumbai within the next three days. Numerous areas, including Konkan, Pune, Madhya Maharashtra, Marathwada, and Mumbai suburbs, have already experienced significant rainfall.
This deluge has caused extensive waterlogging in Mumbai, Baramati, Karjat, Thane, and Pune, severely affecting transportation. Local train services have been delayed—15 minutes on the Central Railway and 10 minutes on the Western Railway. Water has also accumulated outside Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus, disrupting bus services in South Mumbai.
In Karjat, the heavy rainfall for two consecutive days has inundated crucial areas, including the main market, bus stand, and college square, hampering daily activities. Agricultural damages have been reported, particularly affecting banana, pomegranate, and onion crops.
The Konkan region, which is already facing economic difficulties, has seen a significant decline in tourism and related industries, including the Hapus mango trade and fishing.
Continued heavy rain in Pune, Satara, Ratnagiri, Raigad, Sindhudurg, Thane, and Palghar is further disrupting transportation.
Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, representing Baramati, visited flood-impacted areas early Monday and assured that relief efforts are in progress. The State Disaster Management Control Room at Mantralaya is in continuous communication with district authorities, issuing advisories and coordinating response actions.
