New Delhi, Sep 13 (NationPress) As Prime Minister Narendra Modi officially launched the Bairabi–Sairang railway line from Mizoram on Saturday, Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju characterized the day as “historic for the Northeast” and reflected on the unfulfilled promises of railway expansion.
The Prime Minister inaugurated the 51.38-km Bairabi–Sairang railway project in Mizoram, marking a pivotal moment for the state as Aizawl was officially added to the railway map of India after over 172 years since the introduction of railways in the country.
During his visit, the Prime Minister also inaugurated three new trains: the Sairang–Anand Vihar (Delhi) Rajdhani Express (weekly), the Kolkata–Sairang–Kolkata Express (tri-weekly), and the Guwahati–Sairang–Guwahati Express (daily).
Rijiju praised this achievement by sharing a video from 1990 featuring then Railways Minister George Fernandes, who was under the V.P. Singh government, discussing proposals for extending railway connectivity to Manipur.
Fernandes had stated, “We have a proposal to take the Railways to Manipur, and some work on that has already started. Regarding the reservation question, I have discussed this with the Chief Minister and voluntarily agreed to establish a reservation office in Imphal.”
In a post on X, Rijiju noted, “Today is a historic day for the Northeast. In 1990, Minister of Railways George Fernandes mentioned railways for Manipur. Subsequently, the Congress government took no action. Now, Narendra Modi ji has transformed the railway landscape in the Northeast.”
The Bairabi–Sairang broad gauge project, which was approved in 2008-2009, has been completed at a cost of Rs 8,213.72 crore under the Northeast Frontier Railway.
This project is a crucial component of the Centre's Act East Policy, aimed at connecting Aizawl with Silchar in Assam, and subsequently linking it with the rest of the nation.
Prime Minister Modi laid the foundation stone for the project in 2014, with construction commencing in 2015. After nearly a decade of efforts, the project was finally inaugurated on Saturday.
Addressing a vast audience virtually, the Prime Minister emphasized Mizoram's role in the nation's history.
He stated, “Throughout the freedom struggle and nation-building efforts, the people of Mizoram have consistently contributed… The values of sacrifice, service, courage, and compassion are at the heart of Mizo society.”
“Today, Mizoram is playing a vital role in India's development journey. This is a historic day for the nation, especially for the people of Mizoram. From now on, Aizawl will be part of India's railway map. A few years ago, I had the honor of laying the foundation stone for the Aizawl railway line, and today, we proudly dedicate it to the people of the nation,” PM Modi concluded.
