Guwahati, July 15 (NationPress) The newly constructed Bairabi-Sairang railway line aims to link Aizawl, the capital of Mizoram, with the extensive Indian railway network, significantly enhancing the region's economic growth, trade, connectivity, and tourism prospects, as stated by officials on Tuesday.
Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma met with Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday at his official residence in New Delhi, extending an invitation for the formal inauguration of the newly finished 51.38 km long Bairabi-Sairang railway line and the Sairang Railway Station.
According to a representative from the Mizoram Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), the Prime Minister showed interest in attending the inauguration in person, depending on his schedule.
Upon the launch of this crucial railway project, Aizawl will become the fourth capital city in the northeastern region to gain railway connectivity, following Assam, Tripura, and Arunachal Pradesh.
A senior official from the Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) mentioned that plans are underway to extend this line towards the border with Myanmar, located approximately 232 km from Aizawl.
“This future expansion is set to not only enhance regional trade but also strengthen national security along a sensitive border. It's a significant project that enhances cross-border connectivity for India in the Indo-Pacific region,” the official elaborated.
Additionally, Indian Railways plans to introduce specially designed Vistadome coaches on this picturesque route.
These coaches will feature glass ceilings, providing a 360-degree view of the stunning landscapes of Mizoram, including the Reiek Hills, Vantawng Falls, Tam Dil Lake, and Dampa Tiger Reserve. This initiative is anticipated to usher in a new phase of tourism, positioning Mizoram as a prominent travel destination in the northeastern region.
The NFR official also pointed out that the new rail connectivity dramatically reduces travel time; the journey from Bairabi to Aizawl, which used to take five to six hours, can now be completed in just 1.5 hours.
This improvement lowers transport costs and enhances access to health care, education, and opportunities.
“Students, farmers, and traders will now find it easier to access markets and institutions across India. This project also represents a strategic victory for India's *Act East Policy* and the *PM Gati Shakti National Master Plan*, which aims to link all northeastern state capitals by rail,” the official noted.
The Bairabi-Sairang railway line includes 48 tunnels spanning 12.85 km and was a costly endeavor, as it had to navigate solid rock and unstable hillsides—nearly one-third of the entire route is tunnelled.
There are a total of 142 bridges along the route, with bridge number 196 being the tallest, reaching 104 metres, making it the highest railway pier in Mizoram, even exceeding the height of the Qutub Minar in Delhi.
Almost 44 percent of the railway line had to be blasted through mountainous terrain, a task made more challenging by the limited construction windows due to the region's monsoon-prone weather.
The new railway line was commissioned in June 2025. It took 26 years of effort to bring this project to fruition, serving as a testament to the political determination, engineering expertise, and the aspirations of this isolated region to attain connectivity, as stated by the railway officials.
