Security Forces Intensify Operations in Jharkhand's Saranda Forest After Latest IED Blast Injures Another Jawan
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ranchi, April 16 (NationPress) The anti-Maoist efforts in the Saranda forest area of Jharkhand’s West Singhbhum district have escalated following the injury of yet another security personnel, marking the sixth such incident. This occurred due to an improvised explosive device (IED) blast—the second explosion in a mere 24 hours, as reported by officials.
The recent explosion transpired on Thursday as security forces conducted a search operation deep within the Saranda forest. A soldier inadvertently triggered a pressure IED hidden underground by Maoists, which led to a powerful detonation, resulting in severe injuries to the jawan’s leg and other areas of his body.
Due to the critical nature of his injuries, the soldier has been airlifted to Ranchi for urgent medical attention.
Earlier, on Wednesday, a significant confrontation lasting almost three and a half hours erupted between security forces and Maoists in the Baliba forest under the jurisdiction of the Chhotanagra police station in Manoharpur.
During this operation, which was initiated based on intelligence reports, five security personnel, including Inspector Satya Prakash from the CoBRA 205 Battalion, were wounded in an IED explosion.
The other injured personnel have been identified as Shailesh Kumar Dubey, Uttam Senapati, Jitendra Kumar Rai, and Prem Kumar. They were all transported to Ranchi for medical treatment on Wednesday evening.
Security experts indicate that this area is a stronghold for the notorious Maoist leader Misir Besra, who has a bounty of Rs one crore on his head. While sources suggest that some Maoists might have been injured or killed during the encounter on Wednesday, there has been no official confirmation as of yet.
Officials revealed that the active Maoist presence in the region has reportedly dwindled to less than 50, prompting them to resort to IED attacks out of desperation to inflict harm on security forces.
In response to the deadline set by the Union Home Ministry to eradicate Maoism, operations have been ramped up across Jharkhand, deploying thousands of security personnel in forest territories. The entire Saranda region has been placed on high alert, with joint teams from CoBRA, Jharkhand Jaguar, and district police conducting rigorous search operations.
Simultaneously, the series of explosions and skirmishes have instilled fear among the inhabitants of surrounding villages.
