IIIT Ranchi student Aditya found dead in hostel; NHRC takes cognisance
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
A first-year B.Tech student identified as Aditya, a native of Purnia, Bihar, was found dead inside his hostel room at the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIIT) Ranchi in the Khelagaon police station area of Jharkhand on the night of 11 October 2026, in what officials described as a suspected suicide. The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has taken cognisance of the incident, citing alleged administrative negligence and delay in medical response.
How the Incident Unfolded
According to preliminary accounts, the incident occurred at approximately 10:45 pm on Saturday. Aditya's roommate, receiving no response from inside the room, managed to open the locked door from outside. Aditya was found unconscious, and fellow students attempted to revive him by administering CPR.
Students allege that Aditya was taken to an ambulance approximately 45 minutes after being discovered. He was subsequently transported to Medica Hospital, where doctors declared him dead.
Allegations of Negligence Against Staff
Students have levelled serious allegations against institute staff, claiming that timely medical assistance was not provided. Hostel caretaker Deepak Roshan and his colleague Akash are accused of leaving the scene without ensuring help was arranged. On-duty doctor Dr Kunj Bihari Khare has also been accused of being in an inebriated state and abandoning the scene. Students further alleged that security personnel on duty were also inebriated at the time.
These allegations, if verified, would point to a systemic failure in the institute's emergency response infrastructure. The students contend that had an ambulance and oxygen been available promptly, Aditya's life might have been saved.
Protests and Ongoing Agitation at the Institute
The death triggered an immediate wave of protests among students within the hostel premises. Students noted that a separate agitation over the lack of basic facilities at IIIT Ranchi was already under way, with this incident adding fresh urgency to their grievances. The cumulative discontent underscores wider concerns about campus welfare and safety standards at the institution.
NHRC Steps In; Police Investigating
NHRC member Priyank Kanoongo confirmed in a post on X that the Commission had taken cognisance. 'We are taking cognisance of the incident of the untimely death of a first-year student at IIIT Ranchi. The Commission will also investigate this matter regarding the delay in the student receiving treatment, administrative negligence, and the circumstances of the alleged suicide, also the cause of death. We are going to issue necessary directions to the Law Enforcement Authorities and Investigation Agencies, including the Ministry of Education,' Kanoongo stated.
Ranchi Sadar DSP Sanjeev Besra confirmed that the police are investigating the cause of death and all related circumstances, and that the family has been informed. Further details are awaited as the investigation continues.
