Kolkata, Sep 20 (NationPress) On Saturday, the tragic news of another student's passing was reported at IIT Kharagpur in West Bengal, according to police officials.
The lifeless body of a research scholar was found in the B.R. Ambedkar Hall at IIT Kharagpur.
The Hijli outpost police, operating under the Kharagpur Town police station, recovered the body.
The deceased was identified as Harsh Kumar Pandey, a 24-year-old PhD candidate specializing in Mechanical Engineering from the institute.
Originally from Jharkhand, his family has been notified of this devastating event.
Authorities have launched an investigation to understand the circumstances surrounding the incident and the potential causes.
“A hanging body of a student was discovered at the institute. It has been sent for autopsy. Initially, it appears to be a suicide, but the exact cause will be determined after we receive the autopsy report and investigate for any foul play,” stated a senior officer from Kharagpur Town police.
The institute is expected to release an official statement regarding this matter shortly.
This marks the sixth reported death at IIT Kharagpur this year, a renowned institution of excellence in India.
Out of these six cases, five involved hanging incidents.
Earlier this year, in January, a third-year electrical engineering student, Shaon Malik, tragically passed away in what appeared to be a suicide.

In July, a fourth-year Mechanical Engineering student, Ritam Mondal (21), was found hanging in his hostel room; he was from Regent Park in south Kolkata.
Additionally, in the same month, Chandradeep Pawar, a 19-year-old Electrical Engineering student, tragically choked on a cough and cold tablet he attempted to swallow after dinner in the Nehru Hall mess, which was the only non-suicide case among the last five deaths.
