IIM Raipur Set to Launch International Dual Degree Program

New Delhi, Dec 20 (NationPress) The Indian Institute of Management (IIM) Raipur is preparing to unveil an international dual master's degree program. Students enrolled in this program will dedicate one year at IIM and the subsequent year at a designated foreign institution located in Europe or America, according to a senior official's announcement.

In a groundbreaking initiative, starting in 2025, two individuals from each district, nominated by the district collector, will receive complimentary training at the IIM campus, as stated by Prof. Ram Kumar Kakani, the Director of IIM Raipur, during an exclusive discussion with IANS regarding these new initiatives.

IANS: What new academic programs are being developed by IIM?

Prof. Ram Kumar Kakani: We are collaborating with eight universities, including various institutions in Europe and America. Discussions have taken place with the University of Wolverhampton, University of Edinburgh, Napier University, and University of Essex to facilitate a smooth implementation of our Master's Level International Dual Degree Program. This program will involve students spending one year at IIM Raipur and one year at the corresponding foreign institution. The dual degree will be tailored to fulfill the requirements of the international institutes, our own standards, and market demands. Furthermore, the program will comply with the guidelines set out in the National Education Policy (NEP).

IANS: Are you developing leadership programs for professionals?

Prof. Ram Kumar Kakani: We are initiating at least three entrepreneurship programs. One such initiative is IIM Raipur's entrepreneurship program in partnership with SIDBI, aimed at individuals aged 20 to 63 who are either managing firms or running startups. Regarding the Executive MBA program, we are in talks with a significant organization to launch a 15-month Global MBA Program with a focus on leadership. Applicants must have a minimum of 10 years of professional experience. Additionally, we are introducing an MBA program specifically tailored for 45 working professionals from a Maharatna company. In the healthcare sector, we are expanding our current offerings, including the Postgraduate Certificate in Digital Health, and creating specialized programs for leaders of mid-sized and small hospitals. To enhance our emphasis on healthcare, we are negotiating with the state government to design a customized MBA program focused on public administration and governance.

IANS: Have you undertaken any initiatives to support the vision of a ‘Viksit Bharat 2047’?

Prof. Ram Kumar Kakani: At IIM Raipur, we are dedicated to ‘Building Business Owners’ by promoting innovation and entrepreneurship through strategic partnerships and esteemed faculty. For instance, we have involved notable individuals such as Professor M. Srinivas Rao, former CEO of T-Hub, as adjunct faculty to bolster our focus on innovation and entrepreneurship. Similarly, we are collaborating with Dr. Pushkumar Joshi, the former CMD of HPCL, on a specialized program. By engaging such thought leaders, we aim to cultivate a vibrant innovation and startup ecosystem within our institution. Another key initiative is our focus on experiential learning. A prime example is the launch of a three-month Certificate Program in Entrepreneurship on December 16. To ensure inclusivity and empowerment, we are reaching out to district collectors nationwide, requesting two nominations -- one SC and one ST candidate -- from each district. This program is being offered entirely free of charge, highlighting our commitment to accessible entrepreneurship education and supporting underrepresented communities.

IANS: You hosted the international finance conference 'IFC 2024'. How does it benefit IIM?

Prof. Ram Kumar Kakani: The 12th India Finance Conference (IFC) 2024 has marked a significant milestone for IIM Raipur, solidifying its role as a center for international thought leadership in finance. The event saw a remarkable turnout of international delegates. This is a significant boost for researchers, as we have decided to double the prize money for the best research contributions. This initiative acknowledges the outstanding quality of the research presented and left a lasting impression on attendees and stakeholders. The participation of globally renowned experts, including Professor Yakov Amihud, known for his groundbreaking research and potential to receive a Nobel Prize in the future, highlighted the event's intellectual depth and prestige.

IANS: What measures is IIM Raipur implementing to provide students with opportunities to address real-world challenges?

Prof. Ram Kumar Kakani: At IIM Raipur, we hold the belief that each graduate plays a crucial role in the nation’s economy, illustrated by the taxes they contribute and the entrepreneurial ventures they establish. This directly aligns with the essence of Atmanirbhar Bharat (self-reliant India). Beyond individual accomplishments, these contributions stimulate broader economic development by fostering an environment conducive to increased manufacturing and industrial activity, thereby supporting the Make in India initiative. IIM Raipur also stands out as the sole institute in India where the entire state cabinet, including the Chief Minister, participates in two-day residential leadership and governance-focused workshops. This holistic program emphasizes the integration of physical, mental, and professional growth, reflecting our commitment to nurturing capable leaders who can propel India's self-reliance and industrial advancement.

IANS: How is leadership and innovation incorporated into IIM’s teaching methods to shape future-ready leaders?

Prof. Ram Kumar Kakani: At IIM-R, leadership and innovation are integral components of our teaching methodology as we focus on ‘Building Business Owners’ equipped to tackle the challenges of a swiftly changing world. We have initiated several entrepreneurship programs in partnership with prestigious organizations like SIDBI to cultivate a culture of innovative thinking and facilitate the transition from an employment-seeking to an employment-giving economy. Our Entrepreneurship Cell emphasizes practical learning through various activities, providing innovators with real-world experiences.

IANS: What are your expectations from the forthcoming financial budget for the education sector?

Prof. Ram Kumar Kakani: We believe that acknowledging IIMs on par with IITs in terms of government support could further enhance the valuable contributions of management institutions like ours. While IITs enjoy substantial financial support and greater autonomy, IIMs currently operate independently without direct government funding. For instance, last year, we reported a surplus of Rs 15 crore, reflecting our commitment to managing our operations and funding our growth. We take pride in our independence, but additional government backing, similar to what IITs receive, could significantly improve our capacity to excel in education and research, contributing to the nation’s progress.
