Imphal, Oct 6 (NationPress) Flight operations were put on hold at the International airport in Imphal, Manipur on Monday afternoon due to a reported drone sighting, prompting security alarms, according to officials.
A senior representative from the Airport Authority of India (AAI) mentioned that an IndiGo flight arriving from Agartala detected a drone during its final approach, flying at an altitude of approximately 3,600 to 4,000 feet.
“Following this report, flight operations at Imphal International Airport were temporarily halted as a precautionary measure. Normal operations were resumed after the incident was reported to Manipur Police and necessary security clearance was granted,” the official stated.
The AAI official urged the public to refrain from operating drones within the airport vicinity, particularly in areas surrounding Imphal City (East and West), Nambol, and Bishnupur.
Unauthorized drone use could jeopardize aircraft safety, potentially leading to airport closures and significant disruption for travelers, he warned.
The official further cautioned that any infractions of drone operation laws would result in stringent legal consequences.
Maintaining the safety and security of passengers and aircraft operations is our top priority, he emphasized.
Bir Tikendrajit International Airport, located 6 km from the capital city, Imphal, offers connections to Delhi, Kolkata, Guwahati, Agartala, and several other cities in the country.
Imphal West district Superintendent of Police Shivakanta Singh appealed to the public to report any drone activity near the airport, stating, “If anyone is seen operating a drone between Sanjenthong and Kwakeithel, please alert the police to ensure it is grounded. It is disrupting flight operations.”
He reiterated that breaches of drone regulations would incur severe legal penalties. Last year, anti-drone systems were deployed by the Assam Rifles in the outskirts of Imphal Valley to counter any potential rogue drones.
The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF), present in Manipur due to ongoing ethnic unrest, has also evaluated an anti-drone system and provided it to the forces stationed in the state.
