Lisbon, Nov 5 (NationPress) India and Portugal convened for the fifth round of Foreign Office Consultations in Lisbon, where they thoroughly examined their bilateral relations encompassing political ties, trade and economic collaboration, cultural connections, and people-to-people interactions.
Officials from both nations deliberated on India-EU relations and shared perspectives on regional and global matters of mutual concern, as stated by the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Wednesday.
Both parties reaffirmed their dedication to maintaining the existing strong cooperation within multilateral platforms, including the United Nations.
"Both sides evaluated the full spectrum of bilateral relations, covering political relations, trade and economic cooperation, cultural ties, and people-to-people connections. Discussions also encompassed defense and security, renewable energy, agriculture, science and technology, tourism, and education. They assessed the current status of bilateral agreements under negotiation and consented to hasten these discussions for prompt completion," the MEA statement revealed.
Sibi George, Secretary (West) of India's Ministry of External Affairs, and Helena Malcata, Director General for Foreign Policy at Portugal's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, co-led the meeting. They agreed to hold the next round of Foreign Office Consultations in New Delhi at mutually convenient times.
During Sibi George's visit to Portugal, he also met with Ana Isabel Xavier, Secretary of State for Foreign Affairs and Cooperation.
The MEA remarked, "India and Portugal share a rich historical relationship that is evolving into a dynamic, multifaceted, and mutually beneficial partnership. This year marks the 50th anniversary of the re-establishment of diplomatic relations. Both nations expressed their satisfaction with the commemorative activities undertaken this year, which included high-level visits from both sides, such as the visits to Portugal by the Hon’ble President of India, the Speaker of the Lok Sabha, and the Finance Minister of India."
Portugal has been a consistent advocate for India's permanent membership in the United Nations Security Council and the Nuclear Suppliers Group, as detailed by India's Embassy in Lisbon.
The concept of initiating an India-EU Summit was proposed for the first time by Portugal when the current UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres was Prime Minister, and the inaugural India-EU Summit took place in Lisbon under the Portuguese Presidency of the European Union in 2000.
