New Delhi, Oct 16 (NationPress) On Thursday, India firmly dismissed the assertions made by US President Donald Trump regarding a supposed phone call with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

During a statement on Wednesday, Trump claimed that PM Modi had "assured" him that India would not purchase oil from Russia.

When questioned about any communications between PM Modi and the US President, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson, Randhir Jaiswal, stated in a weekly media briefing: "Concerning the US comments on energy issues, we have already released a statement that you may refer to. As for the phone conversation, I can confirm there has been no discussion between the Prime Minister and President Trump."

During a press conference at the White House on Wednesday, Trump praised PM Modi, calling him a "great man" and referred to India as "an incredible country". He expressed his willingness to meet the Prime Minister at the upcoming ASEAN Summit in Malaysia.

When asked about a potential meeting with PM Modi in Malaysia, Trump remarked, "Yes, absolutely, he’s a friend of mine. We share a wonderful relationship."

He added, "He’s a great man. He admires Trump… I have observed India for many years. It’s an incredible nation, and every year there seems to be a new leader. Some remain in office for just a few months, year after year. My friend has been in his position for a considerable time now."

Trump reiterated that PM Modi had "assured" him that India would cease oil purchases from Russia. He stated, "He assured me today that they will not be buying oil from Russia… You can't do it immediately; it’s a process, but it will be resolved soon. All we ask from President Putin is to halt this."

He further explained that if India refrains from purchasing Russian oil, it would "make it much easier" to conclude the ongoing conflict.

"In a short time, they will stop buying oil from Russia, returning to the matter post-war," he emphasized.

Trump also commended the new US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, who was present in the Oval Office, stating he would perform a "great job".

"The new ambassador to India is right here. They will be well represented. You better represent us, not them, okay? Sergio will do a great job," he remarked.

Trump's remarks come as India's trade negotiation team is currently in Washington for another round of discussions with US officials. Trade negotiations between the two nations resumed shortly after Gor met with PM Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval in New Delhi.
