Indonesia Set to Roll Out B40 Biodiesel by 2025

Jakarta, Dec 18 (NationPress) Indonesia has successfully developed biodiesel fuel B40, which comprises 40 per cent palm oil and 60 per cent diesel, exceeding the current 35 per cent formulation. This new biodiesel is scheduled for implementation in the country starting next year, as reported by officials.

The government has established a production goal of 15.62 million kilolitres of B40 biodiesel by 2025, according to Deputy Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Yuliot Tanjung. "We aim to start distribution to consumers from January 1, 2025," he mentioned.

Following the launch of B40 biodiesel, Tanjung indicated that the government plans to gradually advance to biodiesel containing 50 per cent palm oil, as reported by Xinhua news agency.

Moreover, Eniya Listiani Dewi, the Director General of new renewable energy and energy conservation at the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, confirmed that B40 biodiesel has been produced and has passed road tests for both automotive and non-automotive uses.

"I can confirm that the factory has produced B40 biodiesel, which will be available starting January 1," she stated.

This initiative to enhance palm oil usage for clean energy is strongly backed by Indonesia's significant palm oil production, as the nation is recognized as the world's leading palm oil producer.

In September, Indonesia's Coordinating Minister for Economic Affairs, Airlangga Hartarto, announced that the country is prepared to implement the 40 per cent biodiesel initiative from January 1, 2025, to accelerate the energy transition.

This plan involves a fuel blend consisting of 40 per cent biodiesel (B40) and the remaining diesel, aimed at facilitating the transition to renewable energy sources.

"We are ready for B40 and are already utilizing B35," stated Airlangga during the Green Initiative Conference 2024 in Jakarta.

Between 2014 and 2023, Indonesia used 54.52 million kilolitres of B35, leading to foreign exchange savings of approximately 404.3 trillion rupiah (around 26.6 billion US dollars) and a reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 358 million tonnes.

Trials for B40 have been conducted across various sectors, including automotive, agricultural machinery, mining equipment, railways, power generation, and marine transport.
