Indore RE-2 road drive: Stone pelting at civic team, 2 detained in Bicholi Kakad
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Two people were detained after stones were allegedly hurled at police and Indore Municipal Corporation personnel during an anti-encroachment drive in Indore, Madhya Pradesh, on Tuesday, 6 October 2026, to clear the path for a long-pending stretch of the RE-2 road. The incident unfolded around 11 am at Bicholi Kakad, Shiv Nagar, and Shiv Darshan Nagar, where a joint team of the municipal corporation, district administration, and police had arrived with earthmoving machines to remove structures falling on the road alignment.
How the Situation Turned Tense
As the removal team began operations, a section of residents protested, and stones were allegedly thrown at the civic and police personnel. Authorities responded with mild force to disperse the crowd and restore order. Two people suffered minor injuries and were taken to a hospital, while two others were detained in connection with the stone-pelting.
'Some people protested during the removal operation, and stones were pelted at the police and the civic team. Mild force was used to control the situation, and two persons have been detained,' a police official said. Additional police personnel were subsequently deployed in the area to prevent any recurrence.
The RE-2 Road: Three Years in the Making
The RE-2 road stretches 4.25 km and is 45 metres wide. Of this, approximately 3.20 km has already been completed. However, a roughly one-km stretch between Bengali Square and Pipliyahana has remained stalled for nearly three years owing to encroachments and legal obstructions. According to officials, around ₹55 crore has been spent so far on road and connectivity-related works along the alignment.
Relocations and Legal Hurdles
Seven settlements fall along the pending stretch. In the Pipliyahana-Bicholi Kakad area, 325 families have been relocated — of whom 303 families are now living in allotted housing units. The remaining 22 houses could not be cleared earlier due to a court stay order; following a subsequent court decision, alternative housing has been allotted to those families and they have been served a 15-day notice. Additionally, 58 illegal makeshift structures have also been removed.
Families from Shanti Nagar, the Panchmukhi Hanuman Temple area, Skand Dham Colony, and the settlement near the RTO have already been shifted to the Nilgiri Complex under the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana. The administration now plans to relocate a further 117 families in 80 houses in Shiv Nagar and 72 families in 55 houses in Shiv Darshan Nagar to the same complex.
What Happens Next
Police remain deployed across the affected localities to maintain law and order as the drive continues. Officials have maintained that all action is being carried out strictly as per the demarcated road alignment and administrative orders. With the remaining legal and logistical hurdles now reportedly cleared, authorities are expected to press ahead with completing the final kilometre of the RE-2 road — a project three years overdue.
