Violence broke out in Mumbai's Bandra East area on Wednesday, 21 May when an anti-encroachment demolition drive in the Garib Nagar locality near Bandra East railway station allegedly turned violent, with a crowd pelting stones at deployed police personnel and obstructing the operation. The Mumbai Police subsequently registered a First Information Report (FIR) at Nirmal Nagar Police Station against 10 identified accused and several unidentified others under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

According to the FIR, the demolition drive was being conducted in compliance with court orders and official directives targeting illegal encroachments and unauthorised structures in the area. Personnel from the Mumbai Police, the Railway Protection Force (RPF), Home Guards, and other departments had been deployed to maintain order.

As authorities proceeded with the operation, a crowd of nearly 100 to 150 people gathered and began protesting. Police officials reportedly made repeated public announcements urging the crowd to disperse peacefully, but the situation escalated when some individuals allegedly became aggressive and attempted to physically obstruct the demolition work.

According to the complaint, certain members of the gathering raised slogans and created unrest at the site. Stones and other objects were allegedly hurled at police personnel, leading to injuries among security staff. Police reportedly used mild force to bring the situation under control and detained several individuals on the spot.

Charges Filed and Injuries Reported

The FIR invokes charges related to unlawful assembly, rioting, obstruction of government servants from performing official duties, assault on public servants, and damage to public property. Multiple police personnel sustained injuries during the incident and were subsequently provided medical treatment, officials confirmed.

Investigation and Security Measures

Authorities are currently examining CCTV footage from the area and collecting additional evidence to identify other individuals allegedly involved in the stone-pelting and violence. The investigation is ongoing.

Security deployment in Garib Nagar and surrounding areas has been significantly intensified to prevent further unrest.
