Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, April 9 (NationPress) In a pivotal display of India's electoral integrity, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has welcomed a distinguished international delegation to observe the Kerala Assembly elections as part of its International Election Visitors’ Programme (IEVP) 2026.
Voting commenced on Thursday at 7 a.m. to elect 140 legislators.
A delegation of 43 members from 23 different nations arrived in Thiruvananthapuram for the inaugural phase of the IEVP.
This visit aims to provide an in-depth understanding of India's advanced and tech-driven electoral framework.
The delegation also participated in a new initiative where they distributed sweets to first-time voters, a motivational effort led by Chief Electoral Officer Rathan U. Khelkar.
On April 9, the delegation's schedule was packed, showcasing the state's inclusive and diverse election management approach.
The observers began their day at 6 a.m. with a mock election at Booth No. 104 at Cotton Hill LPS, Vazhuthacaud, designed to illustrate transparency and system integrity prior to official voting.
They also visited a women-friendly polling station at Kendriya Vidyalaya, Pattom, and a model polling booth at Government Model GHSS, Pattom, both of which highlight increased voter engagement.
A youth-managed booth at Government Girls HSS, Peroorkada, was another important stop, emphasizing efforts to engage young citizens in the democratic process.
Beyond the polling locations, the delegation toured the district collectorate control room to learn about backend coordination and real-time monitoring, critical elements in managing large-scale elections.
Officials noted that this initiative is designed to not only showcase India's electoral efficiency and scale but also to facilitate the sharing of global best practices in election management.
This programme reinforces India's position as a benchmark in democratic governance.
Earlier, the ECI shared on X, "International delegates participating in the International Election Visitors’ Programme (#IEVP) visited polling stations in Kochi, Kerala, experiencing the polls and celebrating the Festival of Democracy. They commended the meticulous arrangements of the elections on such a large scale."
Voting is set to run from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. across more than 30,000 polling stations, determining the fate of 883 candidates.
Vote counting is scheduled for May 4, which will decide who will govern the state for the next five years.
