An IPS trainee officer, identified as Uday Krishna Reddy, allegedly attempted suicide on Monday at a relative's residence in Moti Nagar, Hyderabad, a day after Attapur Police Station registered a case against him on charges of sexually harassing a fellow woman trainee at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel National Police Academy (SVPNPA). He was rushed to a private hospital in SR Nagar and was receiving treatment in the Intensive Care Unit (ICU), according to reports.

What the Complaint Alleges

A 30-year-old woman IPS trainee officer filed a complaint at Attapur Police Station alleging that Reddy harassed her between 23 June and 10 July while both were undergoing training at the academy. According to the complaint, the harassment began on 23 June with sexually abusive messages sent via WhatsApp.

The complainant further alleged that Reddy made derogatory remarks about her before fellow trainees, falsely accused her of having a sexual relationship with another trainee, and intimidated her into revealing the password of her personal mobile phone. He allegedly took her phone to his room and, without her knowledge, recorded a private video, which he subsequently sent to her husband, reportedly with the intent to blackmail her.

Sections Invoked Against the Accused

Based on the complaint, police registered a case under multiple provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including Section 74 (criminal force against a woman), Section 75 (sexual harassment), Section 77 (voyeurism), Section 78 (stalking), Section 79 (insulting the modesty of a woman), Section 127(2) (wrongful confinement), Section 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt), and Section 351(2) (criminal intimidation). Charges were also invoked under Section 66E (violation of privacy) and Section 67A (transmission of sexually explicit material in electronic form) of the IT Act.

Reddy's Social Media Post Before the Incident

Prior to the alleged suicide attempt, Reddy posted on social media stating that the complaints and rumours against him were baseless and untrue. He expressed full trust in the legal process, asserting that justice would prevail, and urged the media to verify facts before reporting. After the case was registered, he left the National Police Academy and went to his relative's house in Moti Nagar.

From Constable to IPS: A Remarkable Journey

Reddy, a native of Ullapalem in Prakasam district, Andhra Pradesh, had a widely celebrated trajectory. He joined the police force as a constable in 2013 after studying in a government school, then quit in 2018 to prepare for the Civil Services full-time. After three failed attempts, he secured an All India Rank of 780 in a subsequent attempt and joined the Indian Railway Management Service (IRMS). Undeterred, he appeared again and secured an All India Rank of 350 in the Civil Service Examination, earning him a place in the Indian Police Service (IPS).

His journey had drawn widespread admiration, including a post on X by Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, who wrote: 'Udayakrishna Reddy's journey from Constable to IPS officer proves that no dream is too big when backed by courage and relentless hard work. His story reminds us that determination can break every barrier and script new destinies. The future belongs to those who never give up.' The case has now cast a shadow over that narrative, with legal proceedings underway and Reddy's condition being monitored in the ICU.
