Panaji, Nov 3 (NationPress) Two officers from the India Reserve Battalion (IRB) have faced suspension following their arrest related to a shooting incident during illegal sand mining activities in North Goa last month.
Among the seven individuals detained, two IRB personnel are implicated in this firing incident.
The Director General of Police of Goa, Alok Kumar, ordered their immediate suspension upon discovering their involvement.
DGP Kumar confirmed the disciplinary action, noting that an internal police investigation has been initiated against the two constables.
He stated, “Officers engaged in unlawful behavior will be subjected to suitable police action to prevent such occurrences within the force,” while addressing reporters.
The suspended officers, identified as Rishikesh Mahale and Gangaram Mahale, both from Pernem, are among the seven individuals arrested in connection with the shooting that injured two workers by the Terekhol River last month.
The complainant, Ramrishi Paswan (54), stated that the incident transpired around 2:30 a.m. on October 28, 2025, while he and his colleague, Lalbabu God (37), were involved in sand extraction near Uguvem, Pernem.
The shooting, which was carried out by an unidentified individual with the intent to kill, resulted in Paswan sustaining a neck injury and God suffering wounds to his right hand and abdomen, as per the complaint.
A team from the Pernem Police Station, led by police inspector Sachin Lokare, utilized technical and forensic intelligence to identify and apprehend the seven suspects, including the two IRB constables, who have reportedly admitted to the crime.
North Goa Superintendent of Police, Rahul Gupta, had earlier verified the involvement of the two IRB officers, a disclosure that was later addressed by the DGP.
The DGP underscored that while the misconduct of a few does not tarnish the entire police department, legal repercussions will be enforced to uphold accountability.
Further investigations indicated that the shooting was linked to ongoing territorial disputes concerning illegal sand extraction in the area.
Local residents have expressed strong opposition to illegal mining, claiming it has caused considerable harm to their paddy fields and agricultural land.
