Is the Bloom of Artificial Politics in Rural Maharashtra a Sign of Deeper Issues?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, Feb 11 (NationPress) The Shiv Sena Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray stated on Wednesday that despite the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) securing a 'hat-trick' in the local body elections of Maharashtra after winning the Municipal Council and Corporation polls, this political 'bloom' conceals a growing crisis in rural livelihoods and the integrity of democracy.
The Thackeray faction, in a biting editorial published in the party's mouthpiece 'Saamana', suggested that the BJP's victories in rural bastions are 'unnatural' and 'artificial', akin to 'Chinese goods' rather than genuine public endorsement.
“The legitimacy of the BJP’s triumph, along with the faction of the fake Shiv Sena, is questionable due to the very identities and symbols of their parties being under scrutiny. How can the successes of a party whose identity and symbol are not authentic be deemed legitimate? Yet, the reckless celebration continues with the splashing of gulal,” it stated.
The editorial asserted that these election results warrant a humble prostration (Saashtang Dandavat) to the rural populace of Maharashtra. The outcomes evoke confusion, prompting questions about whether they should be embraced as democratic or if one should simply bow their head in despair. As usual, the accolades for the BJP's success are directed towards Prime Minister Modi and Maharashtra Chief Minister Fadnavis.
“These elections occurred during a period when 3,000 farmers have taken their lives in just six months, with the highest rates in Marathwada. Trade agreements with the US and the influx of foreign goods into local markets are perceived as detrimental to local farmers. Over 125,000 government schools, primarily catering to the children of farmers, have shut down across the country in the last five years. Initiatives such as Skill India and Make in India are criticized as failures, with detractors mocking suggestions that unemployed youth should 'fry pakoras' or tend cattle for stipends,” commented the Thackeray faction.
“Is it conceivable that these impoverished farmers and their families still voted for the BJP's Lotus, effectively chaining themselves in servitude?” questioned the Uddhav Thackeray-led Shiv Sena.
The editorial noted the absence of new industries or businesses. Development has become synonymous with projects that only benefit a select few contractors. The rural economy is unstable, particularly as the sugar industry faces challenges.
“Farmers' livelihoods are extinguishing; however, if the victory 'gulal' is being thrown around in Maharashtra due to envelopes containing five to six thousand rupees reaching households for votes, it may soon be said that this generation bartered away their children's future,” it remarked. The editorial underscored a troubling trend where monetary influence and power dictate local electoral results.
“The notion of a 'Blooming Lotus' is that of a pure, beautiful, and fragrant flower blossoming in mud. The Lotus symbolizes Goddess Lakshmi, yet in our nation and Maharashtra, politics has been mired in corruption. Even if the Lotus has emerged again from this mud in local elections, farmers and laborers will continue to face struggles in the quagmire. This 'Lotus' has transformed the rural life and economy of the state into a swamp,” it stated.
