JEE Advanced 2026: Anxious aspirants hopeful after years of hard work
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thousands of aspirants sat for the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Advanced 2026 on Sunday, 18 May 2026, arriving at examination centres across India with a mix of nerves and quiet confidence after years of intensive preparation. The high-stakes exam is the gateway to India's premier Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and candidates must first clear the JEE Main to be eligible for it.
Aspirants Speak: Years of Sacrifice, Hours of Study
In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, a student aiming for a Computer Science seat at IIT Delhi described the emotional weight of the day. 'I have worked very hard for the past two years, so I am feeling very nervous and anxious about how the exam will go. But I am also confident that the hard work I have put in will definitely bring good results,' he said.
Another student from the same city, who hopes to pursue aeronautics engineering at IIT Bombay, said he had attended tuition classes from 7 am to 7 pm daily. 'I have also worked hard for this exam and am also hoping for a good score,' he added.
Jay, waiting outside an exam centre in Rajkot, said he had already performed well in the JEE Main and was targeting civil engineering. He studied for six to seven hours every day during preparation. Fellow civil engineering aspirant Priyanshi credited her parents' support and said her daily regimen of 10 hours of study gave her confidence going into the exam.
Rajesh, whose parents are farmers, put in eight to nine hours of preparation each day. 'My parents and teachers have supported me a lot in my studies,' he said. Another student, whose father runs a tuition centre, said it was parental motivation that drew him to the competitive exam — his goal is to become a software engineer.
Parents Anxious Outside Exam Centres
A large number of parents gathered outside examination centres nationwide, reflecting the enormous emotional investment families make in this process. In Patiala, Punjab, Balbir Singh — accompanying his brother's granddaughter — noted that examination logistics and seating arrangements had improved compared to earlier years.
Another parent described the gruelling daily reality for students preparing for such exams. 'The children study till 1:30–2 am and wake up early in the morning to resume their preparation. Parents also remain worried seeing the hard work and stress their children go through,' he said.
Shadow of Alleged NEET-UG Paper Leak Looms
The examination also unfolded against the backdrop of the alleged NEET-UG 2026 paper leak controversy. A parent in Patiala urged the government to take strict measures to prevent such incidents, noting that examination irregularities can devastate students who have invested years of effort — and in extreme cases, have been linked to student suicides. This comes amid growing public concern over the integrity of national-level competitive examinations in India.
What the JEE Advanced Means
The JEE Advanced is widely regarded as one of the most competitive engineering entrance examinations in the world, with admission to IITs determining the trajectory of thousands of careers each year. Only the top-ranked candidates from the JEE Main qualify to sit for it, making every seat fiercely contested. Results are expected to be declared in the coming weeks, after which the counselling and seat-allocation process will begin.
