Did Jharkhand HC Order CBI Investigation After AICTE-Approved Students Were Denied Exam Access?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Ranchi, Jan 13 (NationPress) The Jharkhand High Court has mandated a CBI investigation concerning a situation where students were unjustly barred from taking their exams, even though they were enrolled in a Dhanbad-based technical institution officially recognized by the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE).
This directive was issued during the court's review of a writ petition lodged by the Principal of the Dhanbad Institute of Technology.
The court expressed serious concerns regarding the actions of the Jharkhand University of Technology (JUT) and the AICTE, stating that the matter is much more serious than just a simple administrative error.
Following the court’s instructions, the Registrar of JUT appeared before the judges. After reviewing the documentation, the court found that the AICTE had approved the petitioner institute for student admissions for the academic year 2025-26 on April 30, 2025.
Based on this endorsement, the institute proceeded to admit students. However, the JUT later prohibited these students from taking their exams.
The court likened this situation to traffic police removing “No Entry” or “No Parking” signs to ensnare innocent citizens, suggesting that the JUT had adopted a similar tactic in this instance.
The court noted that the case prima facie involved severe manipulation of students’ futures and could represent serious misconduct by state authorities.
Given the gravity of the claims, the High Court has included the CBI through the Union of India as a party and ordered a thorough investigation. The CBI is tasked with examining the procedures by which the AICTE and the JUT denied students their right to take exams after lawful admission, along with the involvement of relevant officials.
Assistant Solicitor General Prashant Pallav acknowledged notice on behalf of the CBI. The court instructed the agency to present its investigation findings in a sealed envelope within two weeks. Both the JUT and the AICTE have been ordered to fully cooperate with the investigation.
The next hearing is set for February 3.
