Ranchi, Sep 25 (NationPress) The Jharkhand High Court has put a stop to all new recruitment and advertisements for assistant teachers in the state until the Jharkhand Teacher Eligibility Test (JTET) takes place.
A bench led by Justice Ananda Sen issued this directive on Thursday while examining a petition submitted by 402 JTET candidates.
The court has instructed the Education Secretary, who was present during the hearing, to guarantee that the exam is conducted by March 2026 through the Jharkhand Academic Council.
The bench emphasized that candidates who are already appointed as assistant teachers will not be impacted by this ruling. However, the recruitment process for the remaining positions will remain suspended until the JTET results are announced.
Expressing significant discontent over the failure to conduct the exam for nearly nine years, the court has also prohibited the state from issuing any new advertisements for teacher recruitment until the JTET is conducted.
Representing the petitioners, advocates Aparajita Bhardwaj and Kushal Kumar contended that the extended delay in administering the exam has prevented thousands of aspiring teachers from securing jobs, with many candidates exceeding the upper age limit for eligibility.
Since the formation of Jharkhand 25 years ago, the JTET has been conducted only twice—first in 2013, when 68,000 candidates qualified, and again in 2016, when 53,000 passed.
An advertisement for the exam was released in 2024, inviting applications in July-August. Approximately 3.65 lakh candidates had applied.
However, in June 2025, the process was abruptly terminated after a committee from the Education Department suggested changes to recruitment regulations.
The department had assured that the exam would be held according to the revised rules, but no actions have been taken since.
On Wednesday, the court termed the situation as “serious negligence,” and directed the Education Secretary to personally appear on Thursday to clarify the government’s stance on this matter.
