Why is Trinamool Congress Silent on Partha Chatterjee's Bail Release?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Nov 11 (NationPress) The Trinamool Congress leadership's muted response to the bail release of Partha Chatterjee, the former Education Minister of West Bengal and ex-Secretary General of the party, has raised questions regarding his potential political revival.
Only Kunal Ghosh, the state General Secretary, issued a statement addressing the situation.
"This is a legal matter. If the court believes a person should be granted bail, that decision rests solely with the court," Ghosh remarked.
The party has not indicated whether Chatterjee's suspension will be reversed.
Following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in July 2022, related to the school job recruitment scam, the Trinamool Congress stripped Chatterjee of all his roles and suspended his party membership indefinitely.
Moreover, the party eliminated the position of General Secretary, which Chatterjee previously occupied.
Now, after serving over three years in custody, the leadership of the Trinamool Congress remains distant from Chatterjee, creating an air of uncertainty around his political future.
Nevertheless, Chatterjee still holds a glimmer of hope for his political resurgence. Upon his release, he declared intentions to connect with the residents of Behala (Paschim) Assembly constituency, where he has been a five-time legislator since 2001, to gather their opinions.
"I am accountable solely to the constituents of Behala (Paschim), who have never doubted my integrity. I will approach them and seek their justice. I trust the country's judicial system. Ultimately, the truth will emerge during the trial process," Chatterjee stated to reporters after returning to his family home in South Kolkata.
After a few days of rest, Chatterjee plans to regularly engage with his public relations office as an MLA from Behala (Paschim), ensuring he remains accessible to his constituents.
Political analysts believe that the former corporate executive turned politician is laying the groundwork for a potential political comeback.
"However, the silence from the Trinamool Congress leadership regarding his bail hints at a different reality. Nonetheless, Chatterjee appears to be nurturing hope, particularly since the final call in the party rests with Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee," noted a political observer from the city.
