Key Takeaways
Ranchi, Feb 12 (NationPress) The Jharkhand High Court, while addressing a habeas corpus petition regarding a minor girl who has been missing from Gumla district since 2018, has urged both the state and Central governments to contemplate creating a definitive Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for the use of Aadhaar data in the identification and tracing of missing children.
The petition was lodged by the girl’s mother, seeking judicial intervention for her daughter’s recovery.
During the hearing on Thursday, a division bench comprised of Justice Sujit Narayan Prasad and Justice A.K. Rai requested a comprehensive status report from the state government and law enforcement regarding the investigation's progress.
The state informed the court that an FIR had been filed based on the mother’s complaint, and the investigation is currently underway.
The Deputy Superintendent of Police from Gumla and the officer in charge of the Anti-Human Trafficking Police Station appeared before the Bench, adhering to a prior directive, and outlined the actions taken thus far.
The court was informed that, due to the seriousness of the situation, a new Special Investigation Team (SIT) has been formed. This SIT has traveled to Delhi to pursue potential leads. The missing girl’s image has been disseminated widely and uploaded across various platforms to assist in identification. However, no significant breakthroughs have been realized yet, and efforts to locate her continue.
Highlighting the necessity for effective technological measures, the Bench remarked that investigative bodies should possess clear guidance for the lawful application of Aadhaar-linked data in missing child scenarios, while ensuring the preservation of privacy safeguards.
The court emphasized that cases of missing children must not be treated lightly and called for a strong and well-structured policy framework to facilitate investigations.
In prior hearings, the bench had also shown deep concern regarding child trafficking issues and the efficacy of law enforcement agencies in the region.
In its latest ruling, the High Court directed the authorities to present a detailed and satisfactory report regarding further advancements in the investigation.
