Why is Jodie Foster Critiquing AI for Ignoring Her Role in ‘Freaky Friday’?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, Jan 9 (NationPress) Hollywood star Jodie Foster has expressed her discontent with artificial intelligence (AI) for neglecting her iconic role in the original ‘Freaky Friday’ film.
The 63-year-old actress pointed out that typing "what are the ‘Freaky Friday’ movies" into ChatGPT results in the chatbot omitting her portrayal of Annabel, who famously has a dispute with her mother Ellen (played by Barbara Harris) before they switch bodies and experience life in each other's perspectives, according to Female First UK.
Foster noted that the AI only references the 2003 remake featuring Lindsay Lohan, 39, and Jamie Lee Curtis, 67, along with its 2025 sequel, ‘Freakier Friday’.
She remarked in an interview with Variety, "You know who forgets that I was the original Annabel in Freaky Friday? AI. When you ask, 'What are the Freaky Friday movies?', it mentions the original with Jamie Lee Curtis and the recent sequel Freakier Friday, but doesn't acknowledge my role. It's as if AI has no memory of the '70s."
Nearly three decades after the 1976 ‘Freaky Friday’, which earned over $25 million on a $5 million budget, the film was remade by director Mark Waters, 61.
As reported by Female First UK, he cast Lindsay Lohan as Anna Coleman, a character inspired by Foster's role, with Curtis portraying her mother, Tess Coleman, based on Harris' character.
The 2025 sequel to Freaky Friday was directed by Nisha Ganatra, 51, which Foster has yet to view.
Foster mentioned, "I haven't watched the new one, but I did see the previous remake, and I adore Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan. It's amusing how different it was, considering the context of the era. Jamie and I often chuckle about it since she's a close friend of mine. We laugh about our shared experience in that film."
