Kolkata, April 2 (NationPress) The Election Commission of India (ECI) has requested a detailed report from the Director General of West Bengal Police regarding an alarming incident involving seven judicial officers, including three women. These officials were engaged in the ongoing judicial adjudication concerning voters categorized as having a “logical discrepancy”. They were gheraoed and held hostage in Kaliachak, Malda district, by a group of voters whose names had been removed from the voters' list.

The hostage situation occurred on Wednesday, and after approximately nine hours, a significant police contingent, led by senior district officials, intervened around 1 a.m. on Thursday. They successfully dispersed the protesters, rescued the judicial officers, and escorted them to safety.

Reports indicated that while the officers were being moved to a secure location, there was an attempted attack on their convoy.

During this unrest, another faction of protesters blocked the National Highways near Block-I of Kaliachak under the Sujapur Assembly constituency. The administration managed to persuade the protesters to lift their blockade by assuring them that efforts would be made to reinstate the deleted names on the voters' list promptly.

This incident has ignited a political battle between the ruling Trinamool Congress and the opposing Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Union Minister of State for Education and former state BJP president, Sukanta Majumdar, condemned the harassment of judicial officers, attributing it to the provocative remarks made by Trinamool Congress leaders, including the Chief Minister, regarding the ECI's Special Intensive Revision (SIR) initiative.

Majumdar asserted, “SIR is a nationwide initiative. Such disorder is not evident in any other state, including those governed by opposition parties. West Bengal stands out as the only exception due to the ruling party and state administration's attempts to disrupt the process from the start.”

In response, the Trinamool Congress stated that ensuring the safety of judicial officers is the responsibility of the ECI. Kunal Ghosh, the state general secretary and party candidate from Beliaghata Assembly constituency in North Kolkata, expressed that Trinamool Congress does not endorse any unlawful behavior.

Ghosh emphasized, “Trinamool Congress firmly believes that the ECI must bear the entire responsibility for this incident. We protest against the mass deletion of voters' names, but we do so without chaos. Those instigating such disorder are two or three parties supported by the BJP.” He indirectly referenced the Aam Aadmi Unnayan Party (AAUP), founded by a former Trinamool Congress legislator, and the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), led by Asaduddin Owaisi, who are contesting in several assembly constituencies primarily in minority-dominated areas.
