AISF Candidate Arrested Among 18 in Malda Judicial Harassment Incident
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 2 (NationPress) In a shocking turn of events, a total of 18 individuals, including Maulana Shahjan Ali, a candidate from the All India Secular Front (AISF) contesting in the Mothabari Assembly constituency located in the minority-heavy Malda district of West Bengal, have been apprehended as of Thursday afternoon. This arrest relates to the harassment of seven judicial adjudication officers at Kaliachak the previous night.
All arrested were presented before a district court in Malda on Thursday. During the court appearance, Shahjan Ali claimed to the media that he was falsely accused by the police due to his affiliation with the AISF.
“I was nowhere near the location where the protesters gheraoed the judicial officers. I had attended a function and was arrested while returning home. This is part of a conspiracy against me,” stated Shahjan Ali.
On Wednesday, a group of voters whose names had been removed during the judicial adjudication process held seven judicial officers, including three women, hostage in a block office at Kaliachak.
At approximately 1 a.m. on Thursday, a significant police presence, led by senior district officials, intervened, dispersing the protesters and rescuing the judicial officers, who had been held for nearly nine hours.
Reports indicate that during the officers' transfer to safety post-rescue, there was an attempted attack on their convoy.
On Thursday, a division bench of the Supreme Court, presided over by Justice Surya Kant, condemned the incident as indicative of a severe law and order breakdown in West Bengal.
The bench instructed the Election Commission of India (ECI) to transfer the investigation to either the National Investigation Agency (NIA) or the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). Notices were also issued to several high-ranking officials, including West Bengal Chief Secretary Dushyant Nariala, Director General of Police Sidh Nath Gupta, Home Secretary Sanghamitra Ghosh, and the District Magistrate and Superintendent of Police of Malda, to explain why contempt proceedings should not be initiated against them.
